2 Coconut Songs for the End of Kamala Harris’ Campaign

Many politicians have made music a cornerstone of their political campaigns. Kamala Harris became the first presidential candidate to make coconuts a big part of her campaign. Here’s a classic rock song and a recent dance track about coconuts that would have worked brilliantly for her.

A famous 1970s song would have been perfect for Kamala Harris’ campaign

Harris turned heads for saying, “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.” This inspired some people to laugh at her and some people to laugh with her. Her campaign spread numerous memes about coconuts, and some of her supporters deemed themselves “coconut pilled,” a reference to the red and blue pills from The Matrix.

On to the exciting subject of coconutty music! When classic rock fans think of Harry Nilsson, they think of his serious talent and his friendships with other stars like John Lennon and Ringo Starr. Sadly, his most popular single today might just be his most frivolous. The 1971 novelty hit “Coconut” has been a punchline since the day it came out.

“Coconut” is not a great song but it’s so silly that it’s difficult to get angry at it. The tune’s use in Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs — which was an homage to everything from the 1970s — introduced the song to a new generation. “Coconut” might not have the poignancy of other Nilsson songs, but its continuing popular appeal is undeniable.

A more modern song about the coconut is a little scandalous

Perhaps an even better choice of Harris would be Kim Petras’ dance track “Coconuts.” This song fits well alongside other recent attempts to revive disco music, such as Doja Cat’s “Say So” and Dual Lipa’s catalog. The mix of the old and new gives it a broad appeal.

The track uses coconuts as a risque metaphor. It might be a little provocative for a campaign theme, but it would have worked well with all the Charli XCX memes created by Harris’ supporters on social media. We may never get another presidential campaign that had so much to do with music and coconuts ever again.

Kamala Harris’ recent message for the people of the United States

<a href=”https://time.com/7173617/kamala-harris-concession-speech-full-transcript/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Time recorded Harris’ 2024 concession speech. “People who had suffered great harm and great pain, and yet found within themselves the strength and the courage and the resolve to take the stand, to take a stand, to fight for justice, to fight for themselves, to fight for others,” she said. “Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars. I know many people feel like we are entering a dark time, but for the benefit of us all, I hope that is not the case. But here’s the thing: America, if it is, let us fill the sky with the light of a brilliant, brilliant billion of stars.

“The light, the light of optimism, of faith, of truth and service,” the vice president added. “And may that work guide us even in the face of setbacks toward the extraordinary promise of the United States of America. I thank you all. May God bless you. May God bless the United States of America. I thank you all.”
