Disney Plus might not be the obvious streamer for seeking out tales of the Columbian drug cartel under Pablo Escobar, but they’ve delivered an innovative spin on Narcos.
Dear Killer Nannies is inspired by Pablo Escobar’s son, Sebastián Marroquín (who is a co-creator on the show), and his bizarre upbringing in close proximity to crime and extreme violence.
Marroquín was born Juan Pablo Escobar, but changed his name after his father’s 1993 death and subsequently left Medellín, in an attempt to distance himself from the cartel crimes.
The then-16-year-old was with his father in his final moments and was the last person to speak to him before he was shot by law enforcement. In the years since, he has written a book about the ‘sins’ of Escobar.
The new eight-parter – all of which is out on the streamer today – is told from the perspective of a young Juan, nicknamed Juampi, as he becomes gradually disillusioned with his infamous Colombian drug lord father, here played by John Leguizamo.
Juampi and his sister enjoyed huge wealth and luxury growing up in Medellín, but also had to live under the constant surveillance of Escobar’s hitmen narcos.
The show will undoubtedly draw comparisons to Netflix’s hit Narcos, in which Wagner Moura starred as Escobar. The show followed the Drug Enforcement Administration’s years-long campaign to take down the kingpin and his cartel.
However, the show’s co-creator Sebastián Ortega has said Dear Killer Nannies is not looking to follow in the footsteps of Narcos and viewers won’t see a single brick of cocaine in the eight episodes.
‘There have been so many stories about narcos. Too many,’ Ortega told Variety. ‘But when I met Sebastian, I thought: “This is totally different.”
He added: ‘It’s not about Pablo Escobar – it’s about his son. He’s slowly realising that what he thinks is normal really isn’t, and that his dad is one of the worst criminals in the world. Imagine realising your dad is Pablo Escobar. It’s so bizarre!
‘You are right there, witnessing horrible crimes and then getting a big hug. It’s all in the title: you’re surrounded by people who took care of you, but who also took people’s lives. It’s so hard to grow up in that environment and turn out all right.’
The show has only just dropped, so reviews are thin on the ground, but so far The Guardian has given the show four stars and compared it to The Sopranos as a ‘surprisingly gut-punching’ watch that blends violence with tragicomedy.
