Angelina Jolie was moved to tears at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of her new film “Couture.” The Oscar winner, 50, stars as Maxine, a filmmaker confronting a breast cancer diagnosis while navigating divorce and the high-pressure world of Paris fashion.

Following the September 7 screening at the Princess of Wales Theatre, Jolie joined costars Ella Rumpf and Anyier Anei alongside director Alice Winocour for a Q&A. When an audience member who had recently lost a friend to cancer asked her for a message of âhope,â Jolie teared up before responding.

âIâm very sorry for your loss,â she said, before reflecting on her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who died of cancer in 2007.
Jolie Reflects on Motherâs Words
Jolie reflected on the advice her mother once gave her about living with illness.
âOne thing I remember my mother saying when she had cancer, she said to me once, we had had a dinner and people were asking her how she was feeling, and she said, âAll anybody ever asks me about is cancer,ââ Jolie recalled.
She continued, âSo I would say, if you know someone who is going through something, ask them about everything else in their life as well. Theyâre a whole person and theyâre still living.â
Winocour explained that Jolie immediately connected to the filmâs themes. âShe also had a connection in her flesh to this story since she underwent a double mastectomy to escape her family fate,â the filmmaker said.
Jolie underwent a preventative double mastectomy in 2013 after genetic testing revealed she carried the BRCA1 gene, which gave her an 87 percent risk of breast cancer. At the time, she detailed the surgery in a New York Times op-ed titled âMy Medical Choice,â noting the procedure reduced her risk to less than 5 percent.
A Story About Life & Survival
While “Couture” deals with illness, Winocour stressed the film is ultimately about resilience. âWe really didnât want to depress you about cancer, quite the opposite,â she said. âItâs about the spirit of survival.â
According to TIFFâs synopsis, Jolieâs character Maxine balances a new cancer diagnosis, a teenage daughter, and financial burdens as her life unravels during Paris Fashion Week.
Along the way, she crosses paths with Angèle (Rumpf), a makeup artist writing her own story, and Ada (Anei), a young model finding her place in a new world.
Pairing her red carpet elegance with raw honesty, Jolie reminded audiences why her voice, on screen and off, continues to resonate so deeply.
