The devil might usually wear Prada – but sometimes it’s jeans, too.
Not since Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake have we seen a denim red carpet look so hotly debated, but now, it’s Anne Hathaway’s turn.
The Odyssey actress, 43, stunned at the premiere of her new film The End of Oak Street on Sunday, somewhat dressing for comfort in a pair of loose-fitting jeans and, being that she’s currently heavily pregnant, who can blame her?
Anne, 43, looked both chic and casual as she joined her co-stars at the California premiere of the sci-fi adventure, wearing a baby-blue high-neck satin top with red lining that tumbled into a full-on train, designed by Prabel Gurung. Styled by Erin Walsh, she teamed the glamorous upper-half with a pair of wide-legged blue jeans and heels. The dramatic top was cropped at the front, giving onlookers a glimpse of her bare baby bump.
Anne is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman and announced the happy news in June.
And, if there’s anyone who could redefine celebrity maternity wear, it’s one of Anna Wintour’s favourite muses. So many elements of Anne’s look have had people talking, from the jeans to the baby bump and the combo of laidback elegance.
It’s proven to be marmite on the internet but frankly, it’s refreshing to see a celebrity dressing for themselves and breaking the so-called red carpet rules. The history of jeans when it comes to Hollywood fashion has bizarrely been a contentious one despite providing us with so many iconic looks over the years.
Then Hollywood’s sweetheart couple, Britney and Justin, twinning in their matching Canadian Tuxedos at the American Music Awards in 2001, is arguably one of the most recognisable celebrity style moments in pop culture history.
Kanye West and Julia Fox also had a similar moment when they famously made their red carpet debut together at Paris Fashion Week, with the rapper’s then-girlfriend modelling a cropped denim jacket with cone breasts in 2022.
And who can forget model Bhavitha Mandava opting to wear jeans with a polo to this year’s Met Gala, just because she could.
Anne’s look was undoubtedly much more reserved than Julia’s cone-bearing daring look, but the internet’s reaction to her relaxed outfit would have you thinking otherwise.
‘She is so beautiful and 99.9% of her outfits are IMPECCABLE but this makes me so uncomfy to look at,’ @TunisFromTexas wrote on X, while others jumped to Anne’s defence, including @SmartContracteq who said: ‘Low rise jeans at a major Hollywood world premiere while heavily pregnant? Anne Hathaway continues to be the ultimate trendsetter.’
It’s no wonder Anne is embracing the denim after recently admitting to being a ‘tomboy.’
‘I love that being a boy mom has really informed my fashion,’ she told People earlier this month.
‘I have to always be able to go from a serious business meeting to, like, a basketball court. You have to be able to play pickup basketball at any point, in any outfit. So [I tell myself]: When you get dressed in the morning, dress wisely because you 100 percent are going to have a projectile thrown at you probably by the end of breakfast,’ she added.
Sadly, this might be one of the last red carpet looks we get from Anne, who has had a busy year promoting three out of four films so far. Fans have been truly blessed with screentime from the Oscar-nominated actress, who has appeared in The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey, Mother Mary and is set to star in Verity later this year.
Whenever she returns to the carpet, the jeans are welcome to stay.
