Baby Reindeer star and creator Richard Gadd still has one massive question about his real-life stalker which remains unanswered.

The seven-part series is currently number one on Netflix UK, following Gadd’s real experience of being stalked and hounded with 40,000 messages from a woman who came into the pub he worked in and became obsessed.

Gadd stars as Donny, a fictionalised version of himself, while Jessica Gunning stars as Martha, the stalker.

The actor and comedian, 34, appeared on today’s This Morning with Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard following the enormous success of Baby Reindeer which is the most talked about series on Netflix.

Asked if he has any idea why his stalker came into his pub at that moment, Gadd admitted he’s still clueless.

‘No, but I questioned it all of the time,’ he told Cat and Ben.

In the series, it’s revealed Martha stalked a police officer and a previous employer before finding Donny.

Gadd said the reality was: ‘I wondered if it was the end of her stalking relationship with someone else and the start of it with me.’

Baby Reindeer has been hailed a masterpiece by viewers and critics alike, and praised for changing the perception of stalking.

Gadd recalls his own stalker with empathy and compassion and hopes others can see it’s a heartbreaking situation usually radically different to the ‘bunny boilers’ depicted in film.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, he said: ‘My idea of what a stalker was, was that they are fundamentally, sort of, psychopathic characters. But it just wasn’t that case. I saw someone very vulnerable, really.

‘Stalking, it is a mental illness, a mental state. It’s like, I guess, a fantasy addiction of some kind, and the person genuinely believes the reality in which they are living. It’s just not the reality as it is. And I hadn’t really seen that before… there’s a calculatedness to the stalkers, and a sinister, sort of, insidious intent.

‘I didn’t see that at all. I saw someone who genuinely was lost in a fantasy that wasn’t true, and it was a state of mind, a state of being. I hadn’t seen that before. I felt it was important to show that in a way, and I felt it was important to show that people like that need help too, and that there should be help.’

‘I never want Baby Reindeer to have a moral point for people to take away. It’s not about anything, but I think there is a subtle reference to the fact that this is a vulnerable person who needs help.’

Baby Reindeer is available to stream on Netflix now.
