BBC Breakfast Host Gone Without Warning — Fans Are Demanding Answers

Scott Mills

One Tuesday morning changed everything.

Scott Mills ended his BBC Radio 2 breakfast show on March 24 with three casual words — “back tomorrow.” He was not back the next morning. Gary Davies took the slot instead, telling listeners he was “in for Scott Mills.” No explanation. No announcement. Just a replacement and silence.

Now, nearly a week later, the BBC has confirmed what listeners had feared. Much like other beloved broadcasters who have left their shows suddenly, Mills is gone — and fans are demanding answers the corporation is simply not providing.

The official statement from the BBC was brief and told listeners almost nothing.

“While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted and has left the BBC,” a spokesperson said, per BBC News.

The Mirror, which broke the story, reported that Mills was removed from air last Tuesday while the BBC assessed an allegation relating to his personal conduct. His contract was terminated over the weekend.

The Mirror has since added a significant detail — the allegation concerns a historic relationship from more than 10 years ago, per the publication.

In an internal email to BBC staff on Monday morning, Director of Music Lorna Clarke broke the news. “I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock,” she wrote, per Variety.

“Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years, across a broad range of our programmes on R1, 5Live, R2 and TV.”

A Radio 2 source told Deadline the team had been “completely blindsided.”

Jeremy Vine addressed the story live on his own Radio 2 programme at midday. “I was taken aback,” he said. “I have nothing more than that it was allegations about Scott Mills’ personal conduct which have led to him being sacked.”

The nature of the allegation has not been officially confirmed by the BBC. Mills has not commented publicly.

Mills, 53, had been one of the BBC’s most recognisable voices for nearly three decades.

He joined BBC Radio 1 in 1998 and became a fixture across multiple platforms — Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 5 Live and television. He replaced Steve Wright on Radio 2’s afternoon slot in 2022 before stepping up to the flagship breakfast show in January 2025, taking over from Zoe Ball.

By February 2026 he had grown the show’s audience to 6.5 million weekly listeners, the highest figure since he took over, per Artvoice.

Beyond radio, fans knew him from Strictly Come Dancing in 2014 and his Eurovision commentary alongside Rylan in 2025. Most recently, he won Celebrity Race Across the World in 2024 with his husband Sam Vaughan. The couple married in Barcelona shortly after filming.

He was the BBC’s 11th highest paid star, earning between £355,000 and £359,999 annually, per the corporation’s latest pay report.

His exit comes amid a difficult period for the BBC. Gregg Wallace, Huw Edwards, Jermaine Jenas and Gary Lineker all departed under varying circumstances in recent years. Director General Tim Davie resigned in November 2025.

Mills was also set to host Race Across the World: The Detour, a companion podcast tied to the returning series airing this Thursday. That project’s future is now in doubt.

No permanent replacement has been announced. Names being discussed in industry circles include Vernon Kay, Sara Cox, and BBC Radio 1’s Greg James, per Artvoice.

The breakfast show that made him a household name is already moving forward without him.
