The BBC has just released a new series of its hit under-the-radar comedy, and fans are begging people to binge it.
Funboys, created by Rian Lennon and Ryan Dillon, first landed on the BBC in 2025 for a bonkers four-episode debut following the lives of our kooky group of characters trying to make it through the day in rural Northern Ireland.
As the synopsis reads: ‘From first loves to dead pet pigs, life in rural Ballymacnoose isn’t easy for these sad worms. Can the emotionally constipated lads get it together?’, ultimately dubbing it a ‘weird, charming’ comedy.
As put by one viewer, immaxpower on Reddit, think of it as a ‘mix between The Inbetweeners and This Country’ – quite the combination.
The Guardian generously hailed it ‘some of the most fearless comedy in years’ when it first landed, and called the second series (also four episodes) a ‘gleefully silly and laugh-out-loud sitcom’ in a follow-up five stars.
Among fans, mydeamonisabadger called it ‘such a cracking wee show!’
‘Really liked it, definitely a similar style of humour to This Country. Characters were great, and definitely one of those shows that’s decent for a rewatch,’ comet-lobster agreed.
Queasystick4881 called it a ‘must-watch’, ‘so very daft and funny’, adding it also has a ‘sad, dark and weird’ energy.
‘Love Funboys, feels like one of those shows that absolutely nobody I know has seen. Wonderfully silly and charming,’ 3t283h0rus added.
The new episodes also feature comedy legend Steve Coogan, if you needed any more convincing to give them a try.
To paint a picture of the kinds of bonkers scenes to expect, in the first series, a naked Callum (Ryan) is on all fours smoking a spliff from his bottom as his ex-girlfriend’s brother David (Jamie Demetriou) comforts him with back rubs and verbal assurances.
Talking to Metro about filming it at the time, Ryan said: ‘Having a joint in my ass was the worst. It was cold, it was a bad position, just everything.
‘Jamie totally supported me through that. He was saying: “It’s okay, don’t worry, you’re doing great”.’
Funboys is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
