Beloved BBC Legend Passes Away at 81 & A-Lister Pays Tribute

Alexander Morton has died. The actor was beloved for his role as Golly Mackenzie in the long-running BBC series “Monarch of the Glen,” and his death was announced on Wednesday, April 15. He was 81, The Sun reports. 

Robert Carlyle Pays Tribute to Alexander Morton 

Morton’s other television credits include “Casualty,” “Thugger,” “River City,” “Valhalla Risingand,” and “Luther,” which starred Idris Elba, The Sun reports. Since the news of Morton’s death was made public, tributes have been pouring in, including one from Robert Carlyle. Carlyle is beloved for his roles in “Trainspotting,” “The Full Monty,” and “The Beach.”

Carlyle posted a black-and-white photo of Morton on his official Instagram page. In the caption, he shared his thoughts. “So sad to hear of the passing of the great Sandy Morton. Not only a brilliant actor, but one of the kindest men I ever knew,” Carlyle wrote. “Working with him through the years with Rain Dog Theatre Company was an education. His unique, naturalistic style was a thing of beauty. So real that you would forget he was even acting at all. I’ve never seen anyone do it better than Sandy. He taught me so much.. I owe him so much and he will forever be in my heart. RIP Alexander Morton.” 

Morton was affectionately known as Sandy to many.

Fans flooded the comment section of Carlyle’s post with their condolences, and many also reflected on the impact that Morton had on the entertainment industry. “Forever immortalised as Golly in Monarch of the Glen. A brilliant actor. Condolences to all his family and friends,” a comment reads. 

“Oh man that’s so sad- he was wonderful,” another person shared. 

Other reactions include, “He was the very best,” “So sad, what a wonderful Actor he was. He had a voice that was soothing RIP,” and “Oh no, I worked with Sandy on Monarch of the Glen he was so lovely. A fantastic actor always great when he was on set.”

Other tributes include one from actor Gavin Mitchell. “Such devastating news to hear of the passing of Sandy Morton today from his son Jamie,” he wrote on Instagram. “He was a titian of a man and an actor. Only yesterday I commented on Ian Rankin’s post, saying how brilliant Sandy is, and today….He taught and gave me so much. Warm, wise, encouraging, generous and gentle. An exceptional talent. I was lucky enough to work with him on various things over the years.”
