Alice and Ellen Kessler Pass Away at Age 89
The glamorous singing sisters Alice and Ellen decided to end their lives together after spending nearly 90 years dancing side-by-side.
According to German newspaper Bild, the Kessler twins passed away in Grünwald near Munich by means of “assisted suicide.”
Getty“In Germany, ‘assisted dying’ is permitted under certain conditions: The person must, among other things, ‘act responsibly and of their own free will,’” the outlet revealed. “They must be of legal age and have legal capacity. Assistors may not carry out the lethal act themselves â that would be ‘active euthanasia,’ which is prohibited.”
The outlet reported that the sisters “no longer wanted to live,” revealing that they “had chosen to end their lives together.”
The sisters told the newspaper in April 2024 that upon their deaths, they wished to be cremated and share the same urn, along with their mother Elsa, and their dog, Yello.
“That’s what we stipulated in our will,” Ellen Kessler told Bild at the time.
Kessler Sisters’ Rise to Fame
Alice and Ellen were born in Nerchau on August 20, 1936. They began their careers with the Leipzig Opera ballet before shooting to stardom in Europe in the 1950s, particularly in Germany and Italy.
The sisters represented West Germany in the 1959 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing in 8th place with the song “Heute Abend wollen wir tanzen geh’n” (translation: “Tonight we want to go dancing”).
They branched into the American market with their television debut on the CBS variety show “The Red Skelton Hour” in the early 1960s, later performing with icons like Frank Sinatra and Fred Astaire.
