Activision has announced it is ending support for Call Of Duty: Warzone on last gen consoles, as it prepares for the launch of Modern Warfare 4.

Prior to the reveal of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Activision already confirmed the next entry would leave the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One behind.

It’s perhaps overdue, considering we’re currently six years into the current console generation, but it’s a sign that major developers are starting to turn their back entirely on last gen hardware.

Activision has now delivered another sign that the PlayStation 4 generation is being left in the dust, confirming that the standalone battle royale mode, Warzone, will be delisted and rendered unplayable on last gen consoles later this year.

As outlined on a support page following Modern Warfare 4’s reveal, Warzone will be removed from PlayStation 4 and Xbox One storefronts on June 4. Shortly afterwards, on June 25, the in-game store will be removed on both platforms.

For anyone who downloads Warzone before the aforementioned date, you’ll be able to play it on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One until the start of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Season One. A specific date isn’t mentioned but, based on the seasonal rollout in past titles, it will presumably be a few weeks after the game launches on October 23, 2026.

After this point, Warzone will be rendered unplayable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and will only be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

If you’ve made any in-game purchases on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version, these are tied to your Activision account so they’ll carry over to other platforms.

A number of games have retired their last gen versions over recent months, including Genshin Impact, The Finals, and The First Descendant

Call Of Duty: Warzone originally launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2020. In 2022, it received a 2.0 update across last gen and current gen platforms.

It’s unclear if Warzone will receive another overhaul to capitalise on current gen hardware, but considering Modern Warfare 4 is bringing the series to the Switch 2 for the first time, it’s possible Activision is cooking up a version for Nintendo’s hybrid console.

The big question is whether the Switch 2 port of Modern Warfare 4 will be able to hit 60fps on the system, and based on developer Infinity Ward’s verbage around the topic, we don’t have much confidence.

Speaking to VGC about the Switch 2 version, Infinity Ward studio head Jack O’Hara said: ‘To be honest, it’s been pretty seamless. We got the hardware, then we got the game up and running pretty quickly, and now it’s just about optimisation and performance…’

He added: ‘In our play test, people play it against the other platforms, and it’s super fun. It’s actually been pretty smooth. There are no problems to report.’

While he might sound positive on the subject, the fact he doesn’t outright state that it is running at 60fps on Switch 2 is cause for concern. However, we’ll have to wait and see when the game launches on October 23, 2026.
