Cheaters beware (Steam)
Almost 3,500 players were banned in just one day, as the most recent ban wave tries to solve the Counter-Strike 2 cheater problem.
For years now, Counter-Strike 2 has had a reputation for an over-abundance of cheaters, but the problem peaked in recent weeks as fans complain that the game’s anti-cheat system is just not good enough.
It got to the point where two of the game’s biggest content creators, Anomaly and WarOwl, decided to protest by quitting the game.
However, since developer and publisher Valve recently updated the game, it’s anti-cheat system appears to be far more effective, as 8,000 players were banned this weekend and 26,000 since the new ban wave started.
Since Thursday last week, Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) bans shot up, seeing about 2,000 players banned on the Thursday, almost 3,500 on Friday, about 3,000 on Saturday, and 2,000 on Sunday.
Those numbers don’t include game bans, which are used for offences outside of VAC detection.
The number of game bans also shot up on Wednesday and Thursday last week, barring about 1,200 and 1,600 players, respectively.
That’s according to stat-tracking site CSstats.gg, which states its data is ‘based on official Valve matchmaking games.’
One of the ways Valve is catching more cheaters is by re-introducing its Overwatch feature, which lets the player-base police itself by trusting more senior players to review demos of alleged cheaters and decide if they get banned or not.

There will always be cheaters in popular games like Counter-Strike 2, which peaked at 1.5 million concurrent players at the weekend, and proactive measures, such as Overwatch, are needed to make sure cheaters don’t take over completely.
For now fans can play knowing there are 26,000 less cheats in the game, although if that will make enough of a difference remains to be seen.
