CD Projekt Red is working with Paramount Pictures on a film set within the universe of Cyberpunk 2077, but will it star Keanu Reeves?

Cyberpunk 2077 is already one of the rare video game properties to get a pretty good TV spin-off, in Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, but now it’s hitting the big screen as well.

A live action film set within the Cyberpunk 2077 universe is officially in development at Paramount Pictures, with developer CD Projekt Red set to produce the project.

As reported by Deadline, it will also be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who has worked as a producer on the Transformers film series and The Meg. No director or cast members have been revealed yet.

Speaking about the project on X, CD Projekt Red’s co-CEO Michal Nowakowski said: ‘We’re excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise. We look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time.’

With no writer or director attached, the project will likely be a few years away yet – possibly to coincide with Cyberpunk 2, which isn’t expected until 2030 at the earliest.

Cyberpunk 2077 and its expansion Phantom Liberty starred Hollywood talent like Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba, so it’s possible they could make an appearance as their characters in live action form.

However, the pitch of it being set within the same universe, rather than being a direct adaptation of the game’s story, suggests it might focus on new characters – much like the prequel show Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Paramount, like other studios, is investing a lot into video game adaptations lately. It’s co-producing the upcoming Street Fighter movie, which comes out October 16. Additionally, it’s developing a Call Of Duty movie with director Peter Berg and Yellowstone writer Taylor Sheridan.

Much like Call Of Duty, a Cyberpunk 2077 live action film may run into the problem of being unfavourably compared to classic films the IP is clearly inspired by, like Blade Runner. Unlike Call Of Duty though, at least it’s a compelling world to build from.

CD Projekt Red is currently spinning various projects in The Witcher series, with a new expansion to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, titled Songs Of The Past, set to launch next year.
