David Beckham admits ‘be honest’ viral moment actually sparked major ‘upset’

It may have been one of the TV moments of the year, and has even been nominated for a Bafta no less, but not everyone was pleased with David Beckham revealing Victoria Beckham’s transport to school.

In the footballer’s Netflix docuseries, Beckham, the 49-year-old interrupted Posh talking about her childhood to instruct her to ‘be honest’ and admit that her father drove a Rolls-Royce – after she said they were ‘very working class.’

The clip, naturally, went viral and the couple even recreated the scene for an Uber Eats advert that aired during the Super Bowl, in which Victoria wears a T-shirt that read: ‘My dad had a Rolls-Royce.’

However, David said that the show’s director, Succession actor Fisher Stevens, was ‘very angry’ after the former Manchester United player burst into the room and corrected Victoria, 50.

Fisher, 60, explained he was annoyed by Becks’ intrusion into his scheduled interview with Victoria ‘because David was supposedly out and she could be free to say what she wants.’

In a video posted by The Hollywood Reporter, he continued at an Emmys For Your Consideration event at the Tudum Theatre in Los Angeles: ‘And then he showed up and I was quite upset.

‘I was like, “Get him out of here” – but it actually turned out to be brilliant.

‘It worked out. Thank God the cameraman caught David, and then Michael, I did say “I think we have some gold”.’

It’s a good job Fisher didn’t leave the clip on the editing room floor as it has been nominated for the P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award at this year’s Baftas.

They are up against scenes including Ncuti Gatwa’s unveiling as the 15th Time Lord in Doctor Who, Logan Roy’s shocking death in Succession and Catherine Cawood and Tommy Lee Royce’s showdown in Happy Valley for the award.

At the Emmys For Your Consideration event, David also explained the behind-the-scenes details which led to the moment.

He said the crew thought he had left the house, but ‘I was in the kitchen making a coffee before I went to the office.’

‘I put the set headphones on and all of a sudden I heard my wife go, “Well, we’re down to earth”. And I was like, “No, no, no”.

‘As soon as I heard her say “We’re working class”, I stuck my head in and I was like, “Be honest”.’

David’s candid insight into the making of Beckham comes after he was spotted giving Victoria a piggyback ride after her 50th birthday.

It may not have been quite the Rolls Royce Victoria is used to but her husband’s back did at least provide some relief after she broke her foot earlier this year.

The party last month was a lavish affair attended by guests including  Tom Cruise – who dropped it low and did the splits – Eva Longoria, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and the rest of the Spice Girls, who reunited for an impromptu performance.

When it was David’s turn to celebrate his birthday just a couple of weeks later, Victoria said she loved ‘getting really old’ with him in a sweet Instagram tribute.

She wrote: ‘Happy birthday David. I love us getting really old together! You aren’t far behind me!!!! You are our everything!!!! The best daddy and husband we all love u so so much xxxxx @davidbeckham.

Victoria has been married to David since 199 and shares four children with him: Brooklyn, Cruz, Romeo, and Harper.

Beckham is available to stream on Netflix.
