Diane Keatonâs longtime neighbor is remembering her with warmth and affection. In a touching post shared after the actressâs passing at age 79, the neighbor recalled their many walks together in Sullivan Canyon, where Keaton lived for decades.

âHere we are, walking dogs in Sullivan Canyon, where, having checked out a classic ranch house by Cliff May, we railed against people who throw up McMansions,â the neighbor wrote on threads. âIf you ran into Diane Keaton, she was friendly and opinionated, and she always came dressed as Diane Keaton. Hugo liked her and didnât bark at her dog, a rarity. Goodbye, old neighbor, you were a showstopper.â
The message quickly resonated with fans who admired Keatonâs down-to-earth nature, sharp wit, and distinctive sense of style that made her both a Hollywood icon and a beloved member of her community.
Remembered as a ‘Magic Light’ by Close Friend Carole Bayer Sager

Keatonâs close friend and collaborator Carole Bayer Sager also shared her memories of the actress in an interview with People. âShe was a magic light for everyone,â said Sager. âI just loved her. She was so special; she just lit up a room with her energy. She was happy, upbeat, and taking photographs of everything she saw. She was completely creative; she never stopped creating.â
The Grammy and Oscar-winning songwriter, 81, cowrote Keatonâs only solo single, âFirst Christmas,â released in 2024 alongside Jonas Myrin. Sager recalled how much joy Keaton found in recording the song. âShe so loved recording this song,â she said. âShe was almost childlike about it⦠she sang it so beautifully she even started to cry while singing.â
Private Final Months Surrounded by Family
Keatonâs passing was confirmed by People on Saturday, October 11, by a family spokesperson who requested privacy as her loved ones mourn. A friend told People that her health âdeclined very suddenly,â sharing that she had spent much of her final months surrounded by her two children, Dexter and Duke, whom she adopted in her 50s.
âShe was taking her daily walks with her dog Reggie until earlier this year,â the friend shared. âThen she stopped appearing in public. It was unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit.â
Even in her private moments, Keaton continued to find beauty in lifeâs simple joys, from walking her dog to photographing Californiaâs landscapes. Known for her iconic style, she once told Interview Magazine, âI think you almost always have to have a little bit of the color black to frame things. It accentuates. Itâs beautiful.â
Her neighborâs farewell perhaps says it best: Diane Keaton was not just a movie legend but a one-of-a-kind spirit who brought warmth, laughter, and authenticity to everyone lucky enough to cross her path.
