Ed Sheeran has set the record straight after he alluded to marriage struggles with wife, Cherry Seaborn, in new songs.
The couple has been married for several years and usually keeps out of the spotlight when it comes to details about their personal life.
Over the years, Ed, 34, has written numerous tracks inspired by Cherry, including Perfect, which he sang over the weekend at the Jingle Bell Ball.
However, when he dropped the deluxe version of his Play album, fans immediately noticed some songs appeared to suggest they had hit a rough patch.
After much speculation, he’s now defended his relationship with childhood sweetheart Cherry, explaining these were ‘extremities’ of his emotions.
‘Sometimes people listen to records today and assume that what that song is, is their world 100 per cent at the time,’ he said at a Spotify pop-up event, as per The Sun.
‘It’s very much like heightened emotions. You never write a song on a “meh” day. You always write songs like, “This is the most loving I’ve ever felt, this is the happiest I’ve ever felt, this is the angriest I’ve ever felt”.’
Songs like War Games and Problems directly call out feelings of being deflated as well as worries about being a present dad for his daughters.
The lyrics were immediately dissected by fans hoping to glean a little insight into his life, as the star is usually so tight-lipped.
Ed shared: ‘They’re all like big extremities and that’s what inspires the song. And then that’s where the song exists and that’s why people connect to the song, as people have these big feelings.
‘I think the only time the songs will ever be created, for me at least, are in those moments of big extremes.’
While fans locked onto the more negative ‘extremities’, other songs, such as Heaven, share how he is ‘falling in love all over again’.
The Castle on the Hill singer and Cherry grew up together in Suffolk, officially beginning to date in 2015.
In 2018, they secretly tied the knot, with Ed sharing the good news the following year.
At Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball with Barclaycard on Saturday, he didn’t address the speculation, whizzing through his set after the show ran slightly late.
He did sing the track Perfect, which was inspired by Cherry, as well as big hits like Sapphire, Bad Habits and Shivers.
A few months ago, Ed revealed he was ‘just about to move to America’ with Cherry, 33, and their daughters Lyra, five, and Jupiter, three.
This was to allow the singer to spend time with his family while he was touring in the US, rather than missing them for months at a time.
One downside of moving across the pond was no longer being able to watch Ipswich Town play, a club that he owns a 1.4% stake in.
