Bethesda is updating 2015’s Fallout 4 with better graphics for Xbox Series X/S and PS5, along with improvements and fixes, and a new quest.

While Fallout is the hottest show on TV at the moment, it’s also had a big influence on the various games in the franchise, with many being more popular now then when they were originally released.

Originally released for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the next gen update will also improve the PC version and add new quest elements and items.

The update will be free to anyone who already owns the game, which despite its age was the most popular game in Europe last month and is currently one of the top 10 titles on Steam.

When is the Fallout 4 update coming out?

The Fallout 4 next gen update comes out on Thursday, 25 April, on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.

The update will be available as a free download to fans who already own the game, which can be picked up very cheaply from most online and retail stores.

What’s in the Fallout 4 next gen update?

The update is divided between consoles and PC, and the console list of updates looks like this:

Performance mode and Quality mode settings.

Up to 60 frames per second.

Increased resolutions (not specified).

Stability improvements and fixes.

Native applications for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.

Bethesda’s blog post also states that a free update will be available for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as well, with stability improvements, and login and quest fixes.

For PC gamers the list of improvements is a bit shorter:

Widescreen and ultra-widescreen support.

A variety of quest updates.

Fixes to the Creation Kit.

However, fans who own the game on PC through Steam, the Microsoft Store, or GOG will get stability, mods, and bug fixes as well.

There’s good news for handheld gamers too, as Fallout 4 will also be Steam Deck verified with the update.

Does the Fallout 4 update add new content?

Yes! The Fallout 4 next gen update includes Enclave Remnants for free via the Creation Club, described as:

‘Enclave Remnants brings the Pre-War cabal, The Enclave, into the Fallout 4 storyline. In this new quest, ‘Echoes of the Past,’ can you stop The Enclave from spreading their dangerous ideology and gaining a foothold in the Commonwealth?’

It’s a sizeable and welcome update, especially for a game that’s nine years old. Although it’s now obvious that Bethesda must’ve been holding it back until the show was out.

The loser in all this, however, is the Fallout London team, a crew of modders who were about to release a huge expansion after four years of work, only for the next gen update to delay everything. Although hopefully it’ll still be out this year.
