According to NBC Los Angeles, “fake” images of the sign supposedly burning down went viral on social media. But it’s not true. The sign is undamaged, according to NBC LA, which added that the false images were likely AI.

The television station reported that, “No fires have been reported in the vicinity of the Hollywood sign.”

Photos From a Major Agency Show the Hollywood Sign Intact as Does a Live Stream Video

A photo published by Getty Images on January 8 shows the Hollywood sign intact in the midst of the smoke-filled landscape.

In addition, a live stream video confirms the sign is safe.

As the fires raged, the sign’s location did close. “The Sign is CLOSED! 🛑 Due to on-going wildfires across LA County, a number of parks and landmarks are closed today,” the Trust wrote on Instagram.

Other major landmarks did burn; for example, Will Rogers’ historic ranch and the Topanga Ranch Motel once owned by William Randolph Hearst both burned to the ground, according to a press release from the California Park System.

The Hollywood Sign Dates to 1923 & Was Originally the ‘Hollywoodland’ Sign

According to the official website for the sign, it was built in 1923.

“Hollywood, which by now represented not just a city, but also an industry, a lifestyle and, increasingly, an aspiration, was officially crowned when the ‘Hollywoodland’ sign was erected in 1923,” the website says.

“Built by Los Angeles Times publisher Harry Chandler as an epic $21,000 billboard for his upscale Hollywoodland real estate development, the Sign soon took on the role of giant marquee for a city that was constantly announcing its own gala premiere,” it adds.

Over the years, it has come to represent the glamour of Hollywood.

“The earliest found mention of the Sign appeared on December 14, 1923 in a Holly Leaves article about the Mulholland Highway soon to be built, which would extend from ‘…from the western end of the (Griffith Park) road, under the electric sign of Hollywoodland, around Lake Hollywood and across the dam,’” the website says.
