Fans of legendary Noughties sitcom Green Wing were given the best news possible on Monday when a revival of the comedy was confirmed.

The Channel 4 series, which started back in 2004 and ran for two seasons before coming to an end in 2006, is widely celebrated as one of the greatest British sitcoms of all time.

Green Wing revolves around the lives of the staff at East Hampton Hospital, a fictional medical centre in which unusual and surreal incidents frequently occur.

It starred the likes of Tamsin Greig, Olivia Colman, Steve Mangan, and Mark Heap – the stars of which continued to rise once the series had concluded.

Now, according to reports on Monday morning, the series will be returning as a six-part radio show through Amazon’s Audible audiobook and podcast service.

Tamsin, 57, who has returned to voice her character Caroline Todd, told Metro.co.uk: ‘I have a lovely bit of information – we have actually recorded a podcast with nine of the original cast of Green Wing.’

‘There are six episodes and the characters are still working in that hospital East Hampton Trust, and it’s in the same vein of the very visual humour that you get in the show, but it’s now of course, an audio comedy.’

Deadline have revealed that the series will be called Green Wing: Resuscitated and will feature regular appearances from the original members of the 2004 cast.

On Twitter, one fan of the series, @TheRealSnuggler, said: ‘Wonderful news! This was the funniest and weirdest programme ever!’

Meanwhile, Helena, another Green Wing obsessive, said: ‘Been downloading it as we speak. Cannot wait to hear their voices and laugh at the new jokes.’

The report on its revival continued: ‘[The series will be] created again by Victoria Pile, and scripted by original writers including Robert Harley, James Henry, Oriane Messina and Fay Rusling.’

It added: ‘The show will explore more surreal twists and turns in the lives and loves of East Hampton Hospital’s staff.’

Some fans have expressed doubts over the audio series, however, questioning how a visual comedy show will adapt to its new format, with one fan saying: ‘Not sure what to make of this. Will it work as an audio drama?’

The series will once again follow the likes of Guy Secretan who is now a TV sensation-slash-anaesthetist, Dr ‘Mac’ McCartney, who works as a surgeon at East Hampton, and Caroline who is now a leading light in the medical world overseas.

Each of the six brand new episodes are available to stream on Audible right now, with the platform offering a 30-day free trial or three months of membership for 99p.

During its original run 20 years ago, Green Wing received widespread critical acclaim and was named among the best British sitcoms – both of the 2000s and of all time.
