Fortnite offers to turn off ‘confrontational emotes’ to avoid upsetting players

A new option in the latest Fortnite update allows you to switch off emotes that can be used aggressively, including Take the L and Whipcrack.

For an online shooter, Fortnite Battle Royale is a pretty laidback game, and few people take it all that seriously. A minority do though and they can be very obnoxious about it if they want to, often while using some of the game’s more provocative emotes.

There’s been enough complaints that Epic Games has added a new option with the v29.30 update, so that you can ensure you never see the emotes and that when someone performs one in front of you their character just seems to be standing still, with no emote sound.

The four emotes covered are Laugh It Up, Take the L, Whipcrack, and Make It Plantain. Although Epic Games can add or remove more whenever they choose.

In a tweet, Epic Games stated that, ‘We want emotes to be a source of good vibes, but a few (*cough* Take the L *cough*) can sometimes feel a bit overly confrontational.’

By adding such an option this technically makes it easier to add even more ‘confrontational’ emotes, since now Epic Games knows people can just turn them off if they want to.

To activate the new option all you need to do is go to the Social Privacy section of the settings, where you have the choice to turn them off completely or only see them if they’re performed by friends in your party.
