French actor Jacques Charrier has died. He passed away on September 3, 2025, at his home in Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, France. He was 88, The New York Times reports.Â
The Life of Jacques Charrier

The beloved former French star lived his life out of the spotlight in later years, but when he was younger, he starred in several French films, including âLes Tricheursâ and âAnticipation, ou lâAmour en lâAn 2000.â He retired in 1975 after a movie he had produced did not perform at the box office and instead refocused his attention on painting, Franceâs culture minister, Rachida Dati, announced in a translated statement to Le Monde.
âFrom the 1980s onwards, Jacques Charrier turned to painting, thus reconnecting with his first relationship with artistic creation. His paintings, between intimate reflection and the search for a certain harmony, have been exhibited in Paris, Geneva, San Francisco, as well as in Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, where he had lived for more than ten years,â Dati wrote. âLast July, he presented a final moving retrospective entitled âUn sourire à la vie,â or a smile at life.
Dati also sent his condolences to Charrier’s family.

In addition to Charrierâs contribution to the arts, he is also well-known for his relationship with actress and model Brigitte Bardot. The former couple appeared in the 1959 French film, “Babette en va-t-en guerre” or âBabette Goes to War.” In June 1959, the couple married in Louveciennes, and the moment was swarmed by local photographers.Â
Photos of the couple from their wedding day show them smiling widely for the cameras. They looked blissful, but this happiness would not last.
Jacques Charrier & Brigitte Bardotâs Relationship

Charrier and Bardo share one son, Nicolas-Jacques Charrier, who was born on January 11, 1960. Nicolas-Jacques is Bardot’s only child. The coupleâs happiness did not last, and they divorced in 1963.
What followed was a bitter custody fight, with Charrier gaining primary custody. When Bardo later published her memoir âInitiales B.B.â in 1996, she wrote several pages that did not paint her ex-husband in a good light, and she had unkind things to say about her experience of giving birth.Â
Charrier retaliated by suing her for damages and the suppression of 80 pages about him and their son. He was awarded a modest amount in compensation, The New York Times reports.
His fourth wife and four children survive him.
