Final trailer
Well, the GTA 6 launch trailer happened, I guess. It almost feels like Cyberleek made it, because it didn’t seem to show or tell us anything we don’t already know. There were some new shots, and it all looks super impressive, I’m not going to lie, but it doesn’t look like we’re ever going to have any explanation of features or the story before the game is out.
For a new game, or one with obvious secrets to keep, I can see that being a positive, but we all know what GTA 6 and how it’s going to play so it more feels like there aren’t any secrets to reveal. The secret is that there is no secrets.
And is there even going to be much of a plot? GTA 5 was pretty basic in those terms and I’m getting the feeling that GTA 6 is even looser. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, if you’re just doing whatever you want and the characters react to that, but it may not be what people expect. The mission in the Netflix show seemed pretty standard, so maybe I’m wrong, but I really don’t like how Rockstar are marketing the game so far. And now it’s almost over.

Familiar Duty
During the Frazier ad break I saw the advert for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. If they left off the end title, I wouldn’t be able to tell which game it was. The ad was so generic it could have been any Call Of Duty game from the last 20 years. Not a great sign. I usually try and play the campaigns from most of the Call Of Duty games but this one looks so much like a remake or a re-release I’ll skip it.

Activision needs to rethink things and maybe downscale the warfare aspect and make it like Tears of the Sun type of small action set pieces with quieter moments of recon and trap setting. Just a thought.

Happy doing nothing
RE: GTA 5 completion. I’ve had various versions of GTA 5 for around 10 years and have spent maybe 70% of the time just messing about in director mode and the rest just messing about in story mode.
I don’t think I’ve got very far at all; I just like driving around causing trouble. Online mode, I think I’ve played twice for about half hour total.
I’m pretty sure I’ll get GTA 6 and play exactly the same way.

Horror film
Just seen the Street Fighter movie reviews and they are terrible, just as you’d expect. So this year hasn’t been a perfect run for Capcom after all. Not that I think they have much to do with the movie themselves and, really, how do you make a movie out of something like Street Fighter?
The original has some good memes but it’s mostly boring and you either make the characters look like the game, and it looks ridiculous, or you go and do your own thing and it becomes pointless and not Street Fighter anymore.
I think it’s clear at this point that most video games don’t make for very good movies. The Last Of Us was already half movie and they turned it into a show, not a film, which is completely different. And even then I can’t see God Of War or whatever else Sony is planning working nearly as well.
What does work though is horror, because you don’t have to stick that close to the original game as long as it’s scary. That’s why the new Resident Evil movie works for me and why I’m glad it’s the best-selling. They’ve never managed to get Silent Hill right for some reason, but I really like the live action shorts they did for Soma. I’m hoping they do something similar for the same team’s game Ontos next year.

Different strokes
It’s funny how companies have different reactions to things. Whenever someone does anything illegal with a Nintendo game it’s inevitable the lawyers will be close behind to try and put an end to it.
Whereas Xbox’s reaction to people using AI to decompile games and port them to other hardware is to set up a division to see what else is possible and apparently do it in the open, which I assume means sharing lots of the tooling on GitHub.

GC: It means they want to make money from it.
Next step
Nice review of Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, which seems much more believable to me than some of the crazy 10/10 scores I’ve seen. I’m glad to see Castlevania back but let’s face it, a cheap 2D game with cartoon graphics is not ideal.
Everyone knows that Bloodborne is the closest we’ve ever got to what a 3D Castlevania should be, except not really because it’s not a Metroidvania. It’s a game influenced by Castlevania but it’s not trying to be it.
That, to me, is what Konami needs to aim for though, in terms of atmosphere, quality, and graphics. Castlevania isn’t that serious, I know, but you can lighten things up a bit with the dialogue, and I wouldn’t want it to be that hard, so it wouldn’t be exactly the same.
At a time when people are hungry for a new FromSoftware game, and Soulslikes in general are getting more rare, the time for a 3D Castlevania is now, but I think they’re going to be too late to the party. Hopefully they’ll do it anyway, because it’s crazy to have a new Silent Hill game every year and a new Castlevania only once a decade.

No refunds
Every time I read about how overly fair the Steam refund policy is I get even angrier over how completely awful Sony’s is. There is no way they should be getting away with it and yet I’ve not seen any protests and petitions about it. Instead, people only complain about the lack of discs.
Not that I’m not against all-digital as well but gamer’s buying habits caused that problem. Sony treating us like dirt in terms of refunds is completely on them and yet nobody seems to do anything but tut and move on. I don’t see it ever changing.

Game without end
Being one of the many people who was excited for a new Fire Emblem entry more similar to Three Houses, rather than following up on Engage’s setting, I immediately jumped at the chance to pre-order the collector’s edition of the game. Now that they’ve already announced the game’s DLC so shortly after release, where I’m not even finished all of Part 1 for each character I can’t help but feel slightly frustrated at Nintendo.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m still very interested to see where the DLC goes, with these routes that are essentially ‘cut content’ from the game’s story. Especially after the interview stating they originally planned for eight different routes to begin with, but it’s going to be interesting to see how much content the DLC has for each of these routes that may hint toward how big the game that’s already huge was originally meant to be.
Regardless, even though I’m still not finished the game I think it’s very likely many people including myself are going to pick this DLC up as the game’s quality really can’t be debated in my opinion. But at the end of the day, you can’t help but wonder if this will become common practice for every Nintendo title, I remember Pokémon Legends Z-A had a similar DLC announcement that came out before the game even released.
But should DLC always get the treatment of content that should’ve been packaged with the original game is the question? Especially for those who’ve purchased one of the more expensive editions only to get told you have to fork out even more money for the DLC. I suppose time will only tell how Nintendo will treat DLC for their upcoming titles.

GC: They originally planned eight characters but there’s no indication the new protagonists are the ones that were abandoned or that this is cut content. Fortune’s Weave is one of the biggest games of recent years, its value for money is off the charts.

Just seen the Biohazard fan film with Chandler Riggs. Holy moly. That was great! Very well put together and very accurate to the opening hours.

The concept of a collector’s edition that doesn’t include the game isn’t as new as you might think. They did one for Wolfenstein: The New Colossus and that came out (get ready to feel old) nine years ago, almost to the day.

GC: That’s as we said, for whatever reason it’s always been the norm.
