Games Inbox: Will Zelda: Ocarina Of Time review better than GTA 6?

The Friday letters page tries to guess GTA 6 and Zelda: Ocarina Of Time’s review scores, as one reader is disappointed by the Tokyo Game Show.

Clash of the titans
Now we know that GTA 6 and Zelda: Ocarina Of Time will be coming out close to each other, and be the biggest games of the year, which one do we think will review better? I think this is a very difficult question, because both have previous entries at the very top of the Metacritic best of all-time list.

We still don’t know a lot about GTA 6, but I really can’t imagine it scoring anything other than straight 10/10s. Although I’m sure GC and others will review it properly, I think most sites will just give it maximum marks without really thinking about it. That or they’ll be scared of catching aggro from their readers.

With Zelda, I think it will be criticised a little for just being the same thing, so while I’m sure it will score very well my prediction will be that GTA 6 will be higher and be the highest reviewed game of the year. I guess we’ll see.

Next gen remake
With the PlayStation 6 and new Xbox seeming to be on course for next year, when should we expect the Switch 3? Obviously, it’s not going to be for a long time, but it was eight years between the last two, so that would put it at 2033. I personally think it’ll last a bit longer, because it’s hard to imagine the graphics getting much better for a portable, especially given the stagnation the component crisis is causing, but let’s say 2033 is accurate, that’s going to be six years after the PlayStation 6.

Considering how good the Zelda: Ocarina Of Time remake looks I’d love to imagine what Nintendo would do with tech that’s above the PlayStation 5. It’ll happen sooner or later but how will they use it? A remake of newer games maybe, like Twilight Prince or Super Mario Galaxy, or ideally something brand new.

Casual interest
I had no idea that GTA 5 had over 500 licensed music tracks, that’s absolutely crazy. And I still only play the same dozen 80s ones on the radio. Organising all that must need more people than it takes to make some games. No wonder the rumour is that GTA 6 has a budget over $1 billion.

The only thing I can say is that at least you can see the budget on screen. I’ve never particularly liked GTA 5 or any of the other games but the hype and the appeal of the graphics and the open world are so much that I know I’ll end up getting the new one anyway.

I don’t imagine I’m the only one like this either. GTA 6 will be huge because of the fans, but it’ll be massive because of all the casuals who just want to see what the fuss is about.

Single drop
I forgot the Tokyo Game Show was even happening this week, so it was a bit of a shock to find out that the Physint actor annoucement was the mic drop surprise at the end. Not really something I’m excited about and that was literally the only thing I’ve heard from it.

I feel Japanese gaming is in a lot better place at the moment than it was a generation or two ago, but I wish they took a more leadership role, instead of all these awful American companies that only know how to lay people off.

Tokyo Game Show should’ve taken over E3 by now and Sony should move PlayStation back to being a Japanese company. It’s a simple business decision. Look at how well things have gone since they moved to America and then look at how they were before that – and how well most Japanese publishers are doing at the moment. Plus you’re more likely to get a new Ape Escape that way!

Dongle advocate
On the subject of Sony and their headphones, I have some Pulse 3D headphones and have always been disappointed I couldn’t wirelessly connect them to my Portal. I was even tempted to get some of the newer ones, until my friend pointed out the other day I could buy a UBB A-to-C connector off Amazon for a few quid and just plug my dongle into it.

Now I’m also using them in my phone and Switch 2 also, happy days. Just thought I’d write in case it hadn’t occurred to anyone else either.

Star power
So, Hideo Kojima has got another medium-level star to be in one of his games? I’ll be honest, I really don’t blame Sony for dropping the game, even if people are right and they should never have signed on in the first place.

Using Bill Skarsgård is going to add several million to the budget but for what reason? So he can read off some of Kojima’s nonsense exposition? Why does it have to be someone famous? Just so Kojima can pretend he’s a film director again.

As you might guess, I find him infuriating as a developer. He is good at making games but he’d so obviously prefer to be a movie director I don’t know why he doesn’t just do it. There’s plenty of terrible movie directors that make plenty of money and do big films. I doubt Kojima would be any worse than Zach Snyder or Paul W. S. Anderson, which is about his level.

Maybe if he’d got that out of his system a few years ago, he could’ve come back to gaming more mature and without the chip on his shoulder. Instead, he’s given into his worst instincts and he’s only lucky that Xbox wanted to one-up Sony by bailing him out. Otherwise, Sony dropping Physint could’ve cost him his whole company. All just so he can have a mildly famous film star in his game.

I’ve been mulling over the rumours of changes to Game Pass… do you think it’s an internal way of sabotaging Game Pass so they can say not enough people playing it so they can close it down?

Also, the rumour of paying for multiplayer, I’m sure they promised that would always be free… not exactly making people wanting to buy their next gen consoles.

Common feeling
I can do Nintendo/PC next gen, I think?

Before this generation started I wrote in to say that if Sony and Xbox continue to put their games on PC it would be a no-brainer, but obviously Sony seem to have done a total U-turn on that (after buying some developer just to do PC ports as well, what’s going to happen to them?).

I could see Microsoft following suit at some point, although obviously they are more tied to the PC ecosystem and there’s all those rumours of some sort of console/PC hybrid.

At the minute, I have all three consoles with no plans to buy anything until at least 2030, but a PC is just basically an Xbox+, and my PlayStation 5 is a bit of a white elephant in terms of first party stuff, so that, coupled with their ditching of physical media, has kind of put me off the brand.

There will always be big, FOMO-inducing titles on consoles, I mean GTA 6 is around the corner, but it’s getting harder and harder to justify owning two ‘big’ consoles, or PlayStation 6/Xbox and a PC, just to avoid missing a few first party exclusives.

I don’t know if this is a common feeling among players or if I’m a weird outlier, but I don’t think next generation is going to be as straightforward as buying a PlayStation or Xbox, or both if you’re an enthusiast, as it has been in the past.

There are other factors, like the fact that a PC has to be built when I can barely work my dishwasher, and the ongoing sky-high prices for components, so no options are particularly good at the minute.

Why can’t I be interested in fishing or something?

Dragon Quest gets talked about a lot in terms of being an influential Japanese role-player but something people might not be aware is it’s hit its 40th anniversary this year and has sold over 100 million copies in its lifetime. Pretty crazy, eh?

So what’s the betting that the new Street Fighter film is the one to break Capcom’s magical 2026 run? If that ends up fresh on Rotten Tomatoes I’ll eat my cat (I don’t have a hat).
