In a brand new interview, George Clooney has revealed the truth about his drug and alcohol use earlier in his career.

The American actor, 64, star of numerous films including the Ocean’s Eleven franchise, has confessed that he used to partake – especially in the 1980s.

Known for his clean-cut image, the drug most associated with George is surely caffeine, owing to his numerous ads for Nespresso coffee pods down the years.

But it turns out that, like a lot of other showbusiness folks in the 1980s, he did dabble, and it turns out that he still likes to get ‘blasted’ if the occasion is right.

In a new interview, the two-time Academy Award winner was frank about what he used to get up to at backstage parties and glitzy Hollywood events.

Speaking to Esquire, he said: ‘In 1982, I tried – I did blow and stuff. I used to make jokes about how I did too many drugs, but the truth is, it was never a big issue for me at all.

Reflecting on his recreational cocaine usage, he reflected: ‘At the time, [I said to myself] “No, this is not like heroin. It’s not addictive.” But then it was like, “Oh, well, it’s actually pretty f*****g bad.”‘

He continued: ‘Plus, it was all cut with mannitol – the baby laxative. Everybody would do a line and then [have to] take a s**t.’

However, an episode involving pot brownies ‘around 15 years’ ago, during which George and his friends watched The Wizard of Oz under the influence, made him realise that maybe marijuana wasn’t his kind of drug.

Continuing the open discussion, he confessed that he’s always been more of a booze man: ‘I never woke up and drank or anything. But I’d have runs where I’d get pretty toasty every night.’

George has recently starred in the stage play version of Good Night and Good Luck, which was nominated for five Tony Awards – the Tonys afterparty left his wife, Amal, needing to carry him home.

‘I got blasted. Barely-walking drunk, you know? I came home with Amal, and I was just laughing. We’re lying in bed and I go, “Well, I caught up for all my abstinence in one night.”‘

He added that his hangover lasted the entirety of the next day and joked that the experience left him feeling like he was back in high school again, learning his alcohol limits.

When asked in 2014 by Uncut magazine whether he would ever run for political office, he immediately ‘No’ on account of him having done too many drugs.

‘No, no, no, no, no, no. Drank too much, did too many drugs,’ he said.
