Sorry, Leonardo DiCaprio, but Greg James is fully dining out on the fact that he was at Taylor Swift’s wedding and you weren’t.
On Friday, the Grammy-winning musician tied the knot with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, both 36, in arguably the most star-studded wedding in history.
Guests, including Ed Sheeran, Steven Spielberg, Hugh Grant, Selena Gomez, and 1,000 more, packed out Madison Square Garden in New York City, with the world-famous venue transformed into a whimsical woodland for the multi-million-dollar occasion.
There was a performance from Sir Paul McCartney, the ceremony itself was officiated by Adam Sandler, and the bride and groom were decked out in Christian Dior for their big day.
It really was the place to be over the Fourth of July weekend, with Taylor admitting in the lead-up that she wasn’t going to skimp on invites, sending them out to ‘anyone [she’s] ever talked to’.
This included BBC Radio 1 DJ Greg, 40, who had refused to confirm he’d been invited just days before (it was all very hush-hush, with guests having to sign NDAs) before documenting his trip Stateside on his Instagram Story.
Rounding off his ‘completely insane’ weekend, the broadcaster managed to bag a last-minute ticket to the Brazil vs Norway game on Sunday, skipping his breakfast show the following morning.
Posting updates on social media, he replied to one fan who asked: ‘How’d it feel to be possibly one of the only people in that stadium that went to Taylor Swift’s wedding.’
‘Really great actually thanks for asking,’ Greg wrote back cheekily. ‘Particularly good because Leonardo DiCaprio was at the match looking all smug there in a hospitality box but wasn’t at the wedding. That’s showbiz Leo!’
He’s certainly made the most of his once-in-a-lifetime trip, admitting on Saturday morning after the wedding of the century that he was feeling worse for wear.
Sharing a photo of a slice of pizza, he penned: ‘I am currently experiencing the world’s greatest hangover and unable to reply to the hilarious number of messages I have received over the last 24hrs.
‘But just to say: true to her word, of course the invitation arrived and I couldn’t tell anyone. And oh my God, what an unbelievably brilliant night. I’m off for a nap.’
Indeed, Taylor had vowed to invite Greg to her wedding while appearing on his radio show to promote her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl.
The chart-topper, who got engaged to Travis last August, had already been interviewed by Greg several times before, most famously after her Radio 1’s Big Weekend performance in 2018, when he told the sweaty performer to go and take a shower.
During their chat last October, Greg joked that it was ‘sickeningly gross’ how ‘in love’ Taylor was with Travis, after which he said he’d like the 6ft 6in athlete to ‘do a wrestling move’ on him.
‘The way that he’s going to do that as soon as he sees you at our wedding – that’s gonna happen,’ Taylor replied sincerely, leaving Greg stunned.
‘Whoa,’ he blurted out, asking: ‘Am I coming?’
‘Obviously,’ Taylor told him, laughing that ‘people don’t think [they’re] actually friends’.
‘Thanks for the invite to the wedding… I don’t normally like a destination wedding, but for you, I’d make an exception,’ Greg added.
He revealed his arrival in NYC with a photo of himself and his wife, Bella Mackie, 42, whom he wed in 2018, showcasing their lavish outfits.
Greg looked dapper in a velvet suit, while Bella wore a flowing red gown and animal print heels.
They joined several other British icons on the guest list, including talk show legend Graham Norton.
Alas, Titanic actor Leo was nowhere to be seen, even if he did get a namecheck in the lyrics of Taylor’s 2019 tune The Man, as she sang, ‘And they would toast to me, oh, let the players play. I’d be just like Leo in Saint-Tropez.’
In the aftermath of the wedding, various snaps have been shared online, showing how MSG was unrecognisable with its red carpet staircase and foliage decorations.
Attendees have described it as an ’emotional’ and ‘unforgettable’ evening, with Travis’s mother calling it ‘magical’.
Taylor’s aunt, Robin Gentry, also told LBC News while leaving the event: ‘They cried.’
She added that Taylor and Travis ‘laughed, and they danced, and they hugged, and they kissed’.
The ceremony is said to have included 20 minutes each of personalised vows from the newlyweds, while Taylor’s brother, Austin, was her ‘man of honour’, and Travis’s brother, Jason, was his best man.
As the Blank Space songstress walked down the aisle, a string version of one of her own tunes played, while Travis’s nieces threw petals at her feet.
