Life isn’t always picture-perfect behind the filters—and Hailey Bieber isn’t afraid to show it. The model and beauty mogul got real with fans this week, sharing a vulnerable, makeup-free selfie that revealed a painful skin flare-up, offering a rare glimpse into the toll stress, travel, and pressure can take behind the scenes.

Hailey pulled back the curtain on what life really looks like behind the filtered Instagram grid. The 28-year-old model and Rhode founder shared a vulnerable selfie on July 17, revealing a red rash around her chin and confirming she’s in the middle of a perioral dermatitis flare-up.

“I always flare when I travel or get sleep-deprived,” she noted in her Instagram stories, adding that stress, hormones, and product irritation are all likely culprits. She also pointed to specific skincare missteps, such as using the wrong SPF or testing new products, as triggers for flare-ups.

Despite being the face of her billion-dollar skincare brand, Hailey kept her flare-up routine surprisingly simple. In her Instagram Story, she listed her go-to remedies, which included rinsing her face with water and applying prescription products such as azelaic acid, hypochlorous acid, clindamycin, and her signature Rhode “glazing milk.”

Hailey has spoken openly about battling this skin condition before. In March 2023, she posted a TikTok video describing the bumps and redness, saying the flare-ups began when she was 19 or 20 and often resemble acne or rosacea.

Who’s Most at Risk for Perioral Dermatitis? Experts Weigh In

According to the Cleveland Clinic, perioral dermatitis is a common condition with effective treatments, most often affecting women between the ages of 25 and 45, especially those who use topical steroids, heavy face creams, and similar products.

The American Academy of Dermatology Association adds that the rash can also cause a noticeable burning sensation.

Back in 2022, Hailey Bieber opened up about her ongoing battle with perioral dermatitis, sharing her experience in a candid Instagram Story, as reported by Byrdie. At the time, she revealed she had been dealing with the condition “for a few years” and explained that she wanted to be “as transparent as possible about my skin.”

“It gets triggered by different things and usually shows up on my cheeks, around my mouth, or sometimes around and under my eyes,” she wrote. “Some things I noticed trigger it: trying a new product, a product that’s too harsh, weather, masks, sometimes certain SPF.”

Bieber’s honesty struck a chord with fans, especially as she detailed how unpredictable and frustrating flare-ups can be.
