Helldivers 2 ‘Karl’ tweet hints at surprise crossover with rival game

Was it Automaton propaganda or is Helldivers 2 getting ready for a crossover? (Picture: YouTube)

A now deleted tweet asking about ‘Karl’ has left Helldivers 2 fans speculating about a possible crossover with another online shooter.

Live service shooter Helldivers 2 is still going strong, two months after release, still attracting over 200,000 players a day on PC, let alone PlayStation 5.

It’s not just in terms of player numbers it’s doing well, Helldivers 2 is also trending better than last year’s Spider-Man 2 in sales, and part of that success is down to how developer Arrowhead keeps its fans on their toes, constantly changing and evolving the storyline.

A now deleted tweet, that simply said ‘Where is Karl?’, is a good example of this, and it has sparked a craze to figure out who this Karl is and what he has to do with Helldivers.

The Helldivers 2 Twitter account posted the tweet in binary code, asking where Karl is, but quickly deleted it, before posting again, denying any outside propaganda, saying:

‘Dispel any rumours that Super Earth deep-range transmissions were intercepted with an illegal Automaton broadcast today.

‘SEAF [Super Earth Armed Forces] comms teams identified a minor systems fault that resulted in a quick burst of static interference. Please disregard.’

This has prompted Helldivers 2 fans to try and figure out what it all means, with one leading theory being that it’s hinting at a future crossover with Karl from online shooter Deep Rock Galactic – an unseen ally that helps player characters.

The Deep Rock Galactic Twitter account poured fuel on the fire by replying to the tweet, saying, ‘We don’t know either,’ also in binary.

A collaboration between Deep Rock Galactic and Helldivers 2 seems likely, as developers of the former said themselves last month that they’d contacted Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead about a collab.

It’s the only strong theory going around at the moment, but given how quickly things change in the game it shouldn’t be long before we find out for sure if a crossover is on the horizon.
