How Dakota Johnson Is Embracing Life After Chris Martin Split

Dakota Johnson is embracing a new chapter. She is moving forward with strength and purpose just weeks after her split from longtime partner Chris Martin.

A source close to the ‘Materialists’ actor spoke to People and said, “Dakota’s doing well. The split wasn’t exactly a shock,”. The insider added that Johnson, 35, and the Coldplay frontman, 48, “had the same issues for a while.”

Multiple sources confirmed to People on June 4 that Johnson and Martin had ended their nearly eight-year relationship. The couple was first linked in 2017 and were last photographed together in Malibu on May 16.

About three months earlier, a source told People the couple had been engaged “for years.”

The insider added that they were “in no rush to get married” after first sparking engagement rumors in 2020.

The couple had faced breakup rumors in August 2024. Later, Johnson’s rep shut down at the time. One insider had noted: “They’ve had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great now. They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can.”

Dakota’s New Focus: Living Intentionally

“Dakota wants to live her life very intentionally — she doesn’t want to have any regrets,” the source told People in a report published on June 23rd.

After years of balancing a busy career with a high-profile relationship, Johnson is now focusing on what truly matters to her.

“She loves all her creative projects and is excited about her career. She believes there is more to life than work, though. She wants a meaningful life on all levels,” the insider adds.

Johnson is currently starring in “Materialists”, which premiered in theaters on June 13.

How Is Chris Dealing with the Split?

Martin, meanwhile, was spotted out in New York City on June 16 with his son, Moses, 19. The singer also shares daughter Apple, 21, with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow.

Johnson had previously opened up about her bond with Martin’s children in a March 2024 Bustle interview. “I love those kids like my life depends on it,” she said. “With all my heart.”

She also shared her love of watching Martin perform: “I could watch him every day. I don’t know how to explain it. … I’m watching my most favorite being do his most favorite thing.”

Martin will resume touring with Coldplay in Toronto on July 7, with shows across North America and England through Sept. 8.

Fans, however, believe that the breakup may have had an emotional impact on Martin.

In a June 19 post on X (formerly Twitter), PopTingz shared a clip of Martin performing Sparks, noting he got emotional and softly added “yes I will” after singing “I won’t let you down.

While the breakup may have saddened fans of one of Hollywood’s favorite couples, Dakota Johnson appears to be entering a new chapter.
