Diane Keaton made one of her lifelong wishes come true just months before her passing. Less than a year before she died at 79, the Oscar-winning actress revealed that she had achieved a dream she had carried since her twenties. She became a professional singer by releasing her debut solo holiday single, âFirst Christmas.â
âI CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S FINALLY HERE!â she wrote on Instagram in November 2024, alongside the singleâs cover art, which showed her posing in her signature black turtleneck and polka-dotted pants. âMY DEBUT HOLIDAY SINGLE, âFIRST CHRISTMAS,â IS COMING OUT FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29TH.â
She added, âSO EXCITED TO SHARE THIS SONG WITH YOU ALL.â
A Dream Years in the Making
Keatonâs dream of singing professionally had been with her for decades. She first opened up about it in a 2014 interview with Richard Crouse, recalling her early attempts to perform on stage.
âI had a fantasy of being a nightclub singer that I carried through even into my early 20s,â she said. âI sang a couple of gigs, as they call them, but I was not very good.â
While she admitted she had a âvery small voiceâ and some âlimitations,â Keaton said her passion for music always remained strong. âI have this love of it,â she shared. âI love music. I love singing ballads and sad songs, itâs just so much fun.â
‘First Christmas’ Marked a Joyful New Chapter

Keatonâs single âFirst Christmasâ marked the realization of a lifelong passion. It came two years after she collaborated with singer Ashe on the 2022 track âLove Is Letting Go.â
The project gave Keaton a chance to explore a new creative side late in life, something she often encouraged others to do. Fans praised her for embracing a new dream with the same charm and courage that made her an icon.
Her voice, gentle and sincere, carried the warmth and nostalgia she had long described in interviews. âI have this love of it,â she once said. âI love music.â
Keaton passed away in California on October 11, a family spokesperson confirmed to People.
She left behind not just an unforgettable career but a legacy of laughter, honesty, and heart. Her body of work included classics like âAnnie Hall,â âThe First Wives Club,â âSomethingâs Gotta Give,â and âThe Godfather.â
After her passing, tributes poured in from colleagues and fans alike. âDiane, working with you will always be one of the highlights of my life,â wrote Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who played her daughter in âFather of the Bride.â
âYou are one of a kind, and it was thrilling to be in your orbit for a time. Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, your talent, and above all, your laughter.â
