Inside David and Victoria Beckham’s iconic relationship that started in a car park

David Beckham and Victoria Beckham’s romance has stood the test of time and they’re now celebrating a whopping 27 years together.

The pair have become the UK’s most beloved couple, known for their cheeky banter, iconic outfits through the years, and plenty of scandalous moments.

We’ve had plenty of glimpses into their relationship over time thanks to both of their Netflix documentaries, in which Victoria finally addressed affair rumours which have plagued their marriage.

David and Victoria’s marriage has survived a lot of scrutiny – but when did they meet, how long have they been married, and how old are their four children?

When did David and Victoria Beckham meet?

Although the pair grew up 15 minutes away from each other in London they didn’t actually meet until 1997.

That happened when Victoria – who at the time was better known as Posh Spice – attended a Manchester United game with fellow Spice Girl Mel C, although the pair didn’t meet until she attended another match the following week.

‘She came to watch me in a game in London with her manager at the time, and one of the other Spice Girls, Sporty Spice,’ David told Jimmy Fallon in 2019.

‘We all had our favourite Spice Girl. She was obviously my favourite…’ he quipped, before explaining how they met in the player’s lounge.

‘She actually got the train up that day,’ David revealed. ‘So she wrote her number down on her train ticket, which I still have.’

Victoria, meanwhile, addressed those early days in a letter to herself in Vogue.

‘While the other football players stand at the bar drinking with their mates, you will see David standing aside with his family,’ she wrote.

‘And he has such a cute smile. You, too, are close to your family, and you will think how similar he feels to you.”

It wasn’t easy for the pair, though, who admit in the documentary that they had to meet in car parks in the early days of their relationship in a bid to keep it a secret.

She explains: ‘My manager kept saying, “Try and keep it under wraps.” So, we would meet in car parks and it’s not as seedy as it sounds.’

When did David and Victoria Beckham marry?

The couple got engaged in 1998 and tied the knot on July 4, 1999.

The Beckhams went for a Robin Hood theme for their fairytale wedding, which took place just outside of Dublin, Ireland at Luttrellstown Castle – a venue dating back to 1794.

The 14-bedroom property sits on 560 acres and comes with its own golf course – and that wasn’t the only extravagance on their big day.

Victoria walked down the aisle in a Vera Wang gown said to have cost around $100,000 (£82,000) – while David wore a striking white suit and matching cravat.

However, the pair changed into matching purple Antonio Berardi outfits later on to cut the cake – something David isn’t quite so impressed by nowadays.

Speaking on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs he said: ‘I look like the guys out of Dumb & Dumber when they went to that party and wore those ridiculous outfits.

‘I even had a top hat in purple. Unbelievable. What was I thinking?’

Victoria also wore a gold and diamond tiara by jewellers East Of Paris – but as if that wasn’t enough our newlyweds sat on gold thrones during the event.

The whole thing is estimated to have cost around £750,000 – but despite its grandeur the ceremony had a relatively intimate guest list, with just 29 guests in attendance as they exchanged their vows.

The wedding, which was officiated by the Bishop of Cork, Right Reverend Colton, took place in a small folly chapel at the castle.

As well as their family – including David’s parents and sisters, and Victoria’s parents and siblings – VB had Spice Girls trio Emma Bunton, Mel C and Mel B in attendance.

How old are the Beckhams’ children?

David and Victoria’s oldest son Brooklyn Beckham, who is now estranged from the family, was born on March 4, 1999 – just four months before their wedding.

Brooklyn, who is said to have been named after the area where he was conceived, has worked as a model and photographer and is an aspiring chef.

He had a lavish wedding of his own in 2022 when he became the first of the Beckham children to marry, tying the knot with Bates Motel star Nicola Peltz.

The couple welcomed their second child, Romeo Beckham, on September 1, 2002.

Romeo is a professional footballer who plays for Brentford B, and who has also worked as a model.

David and Victoria’s third son Cruz was born on February 20, 2005 in Madrid, Spain.

Cruz is a musician who plays in his band Cruz Beckham and the Breakers.

Meanwhile, Harper Seven Beckham, David and Victoria’s only daughter, arrived in the world on July 10, 2011.

Harper, who was born in Los Angeles, often accompanies her mum and dad to fashion shows and other events and is rumoured to have her own beauty range in the works.

And she’s a dab hand at make-up, as recent videos giving David a makeover prove.

‘She’s been able to do a full face and contour for quite some time. She’s good at doing it very naturally,’ Victoria told The Times.

Where do the Beckhams live?

The Beckhams have a number of different residences, including a converted barn in the Cotswolds and a penthouse flat in Miami.

However, it’s reported that they spend most of their time at their townhouse in Holland Park, West London.

The house, which underwent £8million worth of renovations in 2016, has its own gym, wine cellar, spa and playroom, as well as eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms.

It also features separate living quarters where Brooklyn used to live before he moved in with Nicola Peltz.

What happened with Brooklyn?

Following his wedding, Brooklyn distanced himself from his family and became noticeably absent from key events, including his dad’s 50th birthday celebrations.

Brooklyn later shared an explosive statement on his Instagram story in January, where he accused his parents of prioritising ‘Brand Beckham’ over family.

In the statement, he claimed his parents have been controlling narratives in the press about his family and tried to ‘ruin’ his relationship with his wife.

Since then, David and Victoria have made several attempts to reconcile with their son, who reportedly wants them to ‘leave him alone’.
