Jason Momoa may be returning to the desert planet of Arrakis, but this time heâs not the only Momoa on set. The âGame of Thronesâ star revealed he wasnât just excited to see the new anticipated âDuneâ film but was actually also overwhelmed with pride. This, of course, was after watching his 16-year-old son, Nakoa-Wolf, shoot his first scenes in âDune: Part Three.â
During a recent appearance on the âSmartLessâ podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Momoa admitted he was a âwreckâ while sitting on set in Budapest, Hungary, watching Wolf. Wolf has decided to follow in his fatherâs footsteps and has a special part in the film, playing Leto II Atreides, the son of Paul, played by Timothée Chalamet, and Chani, played by Zendaya.
âHis first goddamn scene, Iâm sitting there shi**ng my pants,â Momoa confessed. âMy baby, 16 years old. He just killed it. I was crying, I was a f*ing wreck. I was so proud of him.â
From ‘No Way Youâre Acting’ to Leto II Atreides
Momoa has long been protective of his sonâs dreams of acting, often insisting that Hollywood was âtoo hardâ and telling him to stick to school plays. âHe always wants to act. Iâm like, youâre not acting. Thereâs no wayâIâm not letting you act,â Momoa told the trio.
But things changed after producer Cale Boyter saw Wolfâs martial arts reel and encouraged him to audition. The teenager ended up doing a three-and-a-half-hour screen test with director Denis Villeneuve. According to Momoa, his son âkilled itâ without any help from Dad.
â(Director Denis Villeneuve) loves Wolf and heâs just doing a great job,â Momoa said. âItâs the craziest feeling. I didnât want him to do it, but Iâm not going to lie to you, heâs so good.â
Nakoa-Wolf, whose mom is actress Lisa Bonet, has been training in martial arts since childhood. That discipline, combined with growing up around movie sets, seems to have set him up for success.
âIâm doing f***ing Dune with my son right now,â Momoa said with awe. âAnd I didnât help him at all. He did this on his own.â
Jason Momoa: A Proud Dad in the Desert
The âDuneâ franchise, adapted from Frank Herbertâs science-fiction epic, has become a cultural phenomenon, to say the least. The films have now become a monumental part of cinematic history, with the third part already receiving buzz from critics despite it not being released. Momoa originally played Duncan Idaho, the swashbuckling swordmaster of House Atreides, in 2021âs âDune.â Though Idaho didnât survive the first film, Villeneuve is bringing Momoa back in Part Three, set for release in December 2026. Which we arenât so mad about.
For Momoa, though, the real story this time is not his return but his sonâs.
âHeâs with Zendaya, and Iâm like, âHeâs in it,ââ Momoa recalled. âMy baby, 16 years old. And he just killed it. You want your kids to just be better than you. Iâm like, âThis mother***erâs gonna blow me away.ââ
With âDune: Part Threeâ already deep into production, and actors popping in and out of filming and giving sneak peeks, fans are buzzing about what the Atreides twins will bring to the saga. But no one seems more excited than Momoa, who might have just witnessed the beginning of a second generation of Momoa action stars.
Hawaiians for the win!
