Actor Jeremy Allen White is setting the record straight about the name the world knows him by. The “Bear” star admitted in a new interview for Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue that he doesn’t actually identify with “Jeremy Allen White” at all. The actor told the outlet that the three-part name is something he uses solely for professional reasons, explaining that Screen Actors Guild rules required him to add “Allen” because another actor had already registered as “Jeremy White.”

“That’s not how I understand myself,” he said, noting that his full professional name sometimes feels like it refers to “someone I don’t know.” White added that he would love to meet the original Jeremy White in SAG one day and “maybe see if he could allow me to have Jeremy White back.”

The actor said everyone in his real life still calls him Jeremy White, and the full version of his name only appears when he is working. He echoed the same sentiment in another interview, telling E! News that the stage name doesn’t feel natural and was never his personal choice.

He Reflects on Fame, Identity and Finding Balance

Beyond his name, White opened up about how he has handled a shift into higher visibility since the breakout success of “The Bear”. He shared that he is grateful fame did not reach this level when he was younger, saying he spent most of his “Shameless” years working without the pressure of intense public attention. He explained that his rise happening later in life helped him feel more settled, grounded and less inclined to project a tough or overly serious image.

White also addressed the long-running misconception that he is from Chicago, a belief shaped by his character Carmy. He clarified that he grew up in Brooklyn’s Carroll Gardens and had never lived in Chicago before filming the series. The Vanity Fair profile noted that he is often mistaken for the intense characters he plays, but in reality he is quieter, more reserved and still getting used to the public’s assumptions about him.

White, who shares two daughters with ex-wife Addison Timlin, said his kids still don’t fully understand what he does for a living. He laughed that one of them now believes he spends most of his time “selling hot dogs” after visiting a Chicago stand while he was filming. He added that part of the reason he signed on to voice Rotta the Hutt in the upcoming “The Mandalorian and Grogu” was to finally have a project his children could enjoy.

At home, White keeps his personal life simple. He stays mostly offline, uses Instagram only for work and still has the same AOL email address he created as a teenager. He shared that he prefers real-life experiences over digital noise and often scrolls real-estate listings in every city he visits.

As he summed up in the profile, being “Jeremy Allen White” is something the industry created. In real life, he said, “I’m still just Jeremy White.”
