Jon Hamm Reveals His Thoughts on Returning for a ‘Mad Men’ Reboot — Could Don Draper Make a Comeback?

Jon Hamm

After running for seven seasons, the critically acclaimed series “Mad Men” ended on May 17, 2015. That means enough time has passed for fans to start buzzing about a possible reboot. Of course, that would bring up the question of Jon Hamm‘s potential participation in a revival of the award-winning show.

Fortunately for those who are curious, Hamm opened up about his thoughts on bringing his character, 1960s New York advertising executive Don Draper, back to life onscreen.

Jon Hamm Thinks He’s ‘Aged Out of Playing Don’

During a recent interview with Extra TV, Hamm reflected on a possible reboot of “Mad Men,” saying, “Oh god. I don’t know. If they do it, it certainly won’t be with me.”

The 55-year-old actor added, “I think I’ve aged out of playing Don.”

Hamm also noted that he’s happy with how the show wrapped up storylines around Don and other characters like Betty Draper (January Jones), Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser), Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss) and Roger Sterling (John Slattery).

“I was very pleased how the show ended,” he told Extra. “I thought it was a very complete book end to not only Don’s experience in life, but also, you know, Peggy and Pete and Betty and Roger. Everybody had kind of a nice ending to their story, so I’d hate to open that box back up and ruin it.”

Although Hamm doesn’t seem interested in participating in a reboot, he is willing to rewatch the show. Telling Entertainment Tonight that he’s been checking out the series with his wife, Anna Osceola, he noted, “That was 20 years ago. I was 35 years old, you know, when all that came out. So, it’s bizarre to kind of go through it again.”

“It’s a pretty good show. I got to say, I like it,” he added. “But it’s been a really fun experience too, and a kind of a time travel experience to really see it again.”

Don Draper Became ‘Shorthand for the Mad Men Phenomenon’

When the show surged in popularity during its initial run, “Donald (‘Call me Don’) Draper, Hamm’s philandering, shifting, amoral yet tortured, martini-drinking, [cigarette]-smoking antihero [became] shorthand for the Mad Men phenomenon,” The Guardian noted in September 2010.

At the time, Hamm talked about his character, saying, “Oh, that man who literally, at his fundament, is not who he says he is! Who struggles with fundamental dissatisfaction, with a desire to be better or understood or different in some way…”

Granted, The Guardian brought up the fact that he does so “[w]hile wearing suits of devastating sharpness?”

To which Hamm responded, “Ha! Right!”
