Josh Duggar Claims He Is Destitute With Just Pennies in His Commisary Account in New Court Filing

Josh Duggar is busy trying to appeal his conviction and wiggle his way out of restitution and court fees on child pornography charges. Now, he claims he doesn’t have the money to get the job done. It sounds like he no longer has the backing of his rich and famous family. Despite Jim Bob Duggar’s recent land sales, he isn’t providing his son with money for a legal team. He isn’t putting cash in his commissary account, either. In a recent filing, Josh, the eldest of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s kids, claims he has absolutely no assets. He admitted he has less than a quarter in his commissary account. Duggar family critics think it’s a ploy.

Josh Duggar says he’s entirely out of money and in desperate need of help. The former reality TV star recently submitted new paperwork to the courts, hoping to have his restitution and court fee balances slashed. According to the U.S. Sun, the disgraced former reality TV star revealed just how dire his financial situation is.

In the filing, Duggar claims he has just $0.22 in his commissary account and absolutely no money or assets in the outside world. He claims he does not have a prison job that pays and has no way of making payments on those judgments. The most interesting statement pertains to the rest of the Duggar clan. Josh revealed that his family used to put money in his account, but has since stopped.

Josh was sentenced to 12 years behind bars for possessing and receiving child pornography. He was also ordered to pay $50,000 in fines. The felon has a tentative release date of December 2032. Once released, he’ll need to abide by a lengthy list of restrictions. He will need to stay away from minors and refrain from using the internet, for example.

Josh Duggar was previously receiving funds from his family

Before his most recent filings, the father of seven was enjoying creature comforts that are available through the commissary or by special order for inmates. According to the U.S. Sun, Duggar was spotted wearing name-brand sneakers and shirts, all of which are available through the commissary.

While Josh Duggar was once spending freely, he wasn’t exactly breaking the Duggar family bank. He, like other inmates, is subject to a spending cap that is imposed on all inmates in federal prisons. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, inmates in federal institutions are limited to spending no more than $360 per month on commissary items. Even A-list inmates, like Sean’ Diddy’ Combs, Harvey Weinstein, and R. Kelly, are held to the cap; surely Josh Duggar is, too.

Why did the family support stop so suddenly?

Josh Duggar has been in prison for years now. You would think if his entire family were going to disown him, they would have done it right after he was convicted. That was not the case. A handful of Duggars, including Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar and Josh’s wife, Anna Duggar, stood by him up until just a few months ago, it seems.

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are believed to have funded Josh’s first round of court appeals. Those early appeals used the lawyers they hired to argue his case. Critics think Jim Bob footed that bill, too. His wife was spotted visiting him regularly in Texas. She was rumored to have even brought some of the kids to see him behind bars. She attempted to defend him a few times on social media before largely disappearing from the platforms.

So, why are they washing their hands of him now? Family followers don’t think they actually are. Several critics theorize that the Duggars have opted not to fill Josh’s commisary fund in an attempt to strengthen his case for public counsel and lower court fees. It wouldn’t be a completely outrageous strategy, albeit one that is likely ineffective. After all, it’s largely assumed that Josh and his wife, Anna, engaged in some creative financial maneuvering prior to his trial. LLCs were established, property was sold, and money was transferred. It appears that Josh made an effort to conceal his finances in the days and weeks leading up to his conviction.

It will be some time before we know whether his current motion moves the process along for him. His last filing was swiftly denied. This one might take a bit longer to make its way through the court system. We’ll keep you updated.
