Justin and Hailey Bieber’s relationship from their awkward first meeting to expecting first baby

Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey took to Instagram to announce they are expecting their first child in an adorable post that shocked fans.

Despite being subject to split rumours over recent months, the couple looked as loved up as ever in a video of the Baby singer, 30, cuddling up to the Rhode businesswoman, 27, during a surprise vow renewal in a secluded field.

Draped all in white, Hailey displayed her blossoming bump for the first time which promptly sent social media into meltdown.

Congratulations to the couple, who wed in 2018, have poured in, including a message from Justin’s famous ex Selena Gomez.

It’s been a wild ride for the couple, who first met in 2009 and have been subject to everything from dating, marriage, and pregnancy rumours since.

From an actual whirlwind engagement and wedding to health scares and more, the couple have endured so many storms during their relationship – but where did it all begin?

As the sweethearts prepare to welcome a new member to the Bieber clan, we take a look back through their full relationship timeline from their first meeting to their split, reconciliation, and surprise wedding.

2009

Hailey and Justin were introduced back in 2009 by Hailey’s father, actor Stephen Baldwin.

It was awkward and adorable all at once, as a shaggy-haired Justin, in his cute 15-year-old Baby (baby, baby, ooooh!) stage shook the hand of an even younger 13-year-old Hailey.

As Steve spoke to Biebs, Hailey just stood there with her arms crossed backstage at The Today Show.

2010

We weren’t blessed with another meeting between these two for some time, as they kept their distance in 2010.

It was a sad year.

2011

REJOICE! We see Justin and Hailey hanging out on the red carpet with her dad Steve (again) at the premiere of Justin’s documentary Never Say Never.

We’re starting to think Stephen Baldwin may be a bigger Belieber than we thought.

In a shock move that now is really quite hilarious and all kinds of awks, Hailey tweeted about her love for Jelena.

In a tweet (now post, as the site rebranded to X) she said: ‘I don’t care what anyone says but Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez together is the definition of a teenage dream! #word’.

No surprise it’s now deleted.

2014

Hailey burrows herself further into Justin’s life, and vice versa, as she grows close to his friends Kylie and Kendall Jenner.

This is where the rumours they were dating began, with Kendall said to have championed their friendship.

Not long before the photo of them all hanging out with Gigi, Selena apparently unfollowed both Jenner sisters.

In November, they took their third wheel, we mean Kendall, to a Hillsong meet, where the three of them are pictured taking in the whole thing in all its grandeur and sing-song.

That same month Justin was on hand to celebrate Hailey’s 18th birthday with their new go-betweens, the Jenner sisters.

As dating rumours hit fever pitch, both parties denied any monkey business was going on as of December 2014.

Hailey said to E! News: ‘I’ve known [Justin] since I was so young – since I was like 13 – and we’ve just been good friends over the years. We have just stayed close and there’s nothing more to it than that.’

Meanwhile, Justin called her his ‘good friend’ and said he’s ‘super single’.

Hailey reportedly headed to Justin’s house on Boxing Day and didn’t emerge til the next morning when they headed to a diner for breakfast.

She said she stayed at her house, though. Emphasising the *her* house bit.

She tweeted: ‘Glad I got such a good night sleep last night, at MY own home, alone. Quit it with the stories!’

2015

They say whoever you ring in the New Year with will be by your side for the year, so the fact Justin and Hailey celebrated together in 2015 was a big sign.

In April, engagement rumours began (if only they knew) after a bogus news story claimed they were to be wed. The hashtag #CongratsJustinandHailey even went around.

In July, They got matching tattoos in honour of a little girl named Georgia who is the daughter of Chad and Julia Veach from their church. Their daughter was born with Lissencephaly so the couple (and Selena, too) got ‘G’ tattooed on their persons.

Just a few days after he was rumoured to have reconciled with Selena (again) Justin’s trousers go missing and turn up on Hailey.

She took to Instagram wearing a pair of his famous drop-crotchers and in the comments, they have a lovers’ quarrel about it all as he asked for his slacks back.

That same month they’re totally on, though, as they head, with their families, to St Barts.

2016

Justin and Hailey kicked off 2016 spending NYE together, making out at Leonardo DiCaprio’s party.

This was the biggest sign of PDA from the couple yet and by golly gosh we lost it.

Even if it was a simple little NYE kiss (didn’t look that way, but moving on) it did nothing to quell hardcore rumours these two were definitely on.

In February they confirmed they’re dating, however, both say they’re not exclusive. Ah yes, that old chestnut.

Hailey said to old pal E!: ‘We are not an exclusive couple. He’s about to go on tour. Relationships at this age are already complicated, but I don’t really like to talk about it because it’s between me and him.’

August 2016 – May 2018

There was a really long period here where Justin goes back to Selena a couple times and even shacked up with Sophia Richie and even, reportedly, Kourtney Kardsahian.

Later Hailey would admit the two weren’t even friends.

In the aforementioned interview, right as Justin and Selena split for maybe the last time (to quote the man himself, never say never) Hailey said the two had ‘moved past’ their fall out and were friends again.

‘I met him when I was really young and he was one of my best friends,’ she told the Times. ‘Everybody knows that at a certain point in time that turned into something else, but that just happens when you’re 18, 19. It was what it was. We went through a long period of time when we weren’t friends. We didn’t speak for quite some time and there was a lot of weirdness that went on. We’ve moved past that.’

Which led to…

2018

In June 2018, they were spotted holding hands and making out in New York like randy teens.

They also went on a trip to Miami to another Hillsong conference and were spotted on DC.

They spend the weekend of the Fourth of July in the Hamptons, sunning, beaching, just generally falling in love all over again.

That week she was also sporting a ring on her ring finger. Justin later confirmed the engagement via Instagram in an emotional tribute to his fiance.

‘Hailey I am soooo in love with everything about you! So committed to spending my life getting to know every single part of you loving you patiently and kindly,” he wrote.

‘I promise to lead our family with honor and integrity letting Jesus through his Holy Spirit guide us in everything we do and every decision we make. My heart is COMPLETELY and FULLY YOURS and I will ALWAYS put you first! You are the love of my life Hailey Baldwin and I wouldn’t want to spend it with anybody else.’

The couple moved in with each other shortly after, before tying the knot in September after being spotted at a courthouse in lower Manhattan.

2019

Following their intimate wedding the previous year, 2019 saw the Biebers enjoy a grand celebration with 150 of their friends and family at the Montage Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina.

They exchanged vows in a ceremony that was held on-site at the Somerset Chapel in front of a star-studded guest list, including the likes of Kendall, Katy Perry and Scooter Braun.

And E! News states the ceremony was conducted by the Sorry star’s pastor Judah Smith, while the model’s sister Alaia Baldwin and cousin Ireland Baldwin were her bridesmaids.

A source told the publication the ‘guests [were] cheering’ after they said “I do”.

2020

Hailey gave an insight into the newlywedded life when she was interviewed as part of Justin’s Seasons docu-series.

‘He was the first person I ever had real feelings for,’ she said. ‘When things kind of went south for a little bit and we went our separate ways, I just knew that no matter what the outcome was going to be, he was going to be somebody that I loved for the rest of my life.

‘No matter what, he was always going to hold a special place in my heart.’

2021

The couple added to their ink collection in 2021 as they got matching peach tattoos in March to celebrate Justin’s hit single Peaches.

Later that year, they appeared on the In Good Faith with Chelsea and Judah Smith podcast where they got real on the challenges they had faced in their marriage.

Justin discussed his battle with depression, with Hailey admitting it was difficult to watch her husband struggle.

‘There were days where I literally was like, “I don’t know if he’s going to be okay”, she said.

‘Something really deep down inside of me was like, “He’s going to get through it.” I just didn’t know how long it was going to take. That’s what I think was the hardest thing. There’s no guarantees,’ she said.

‘Imagine abandoning somebody in the middle of the worst time of their life, potentially. I’m not that type of person.’

2022

With fans speculating whether the couple would be welcoming children any time soon, Hailey told WSJ Magazine in an interview she ‘definitely’ isn’t ready for kids just yet.

‘I think ideally in the next couple of years we would try,’ she said. ‘But there’s a reason they call it try, right? You don’t know how long that process is ever going to take. Definitely no kids this year; that would be a little bit hectic, I think.’

The year would become fraught with health issues for the couple, with Hailey being hospitalised due to a mini-stroke in March.

She took to Instagram to open up on the scary health emergency, explaining she was ‘sitting at breakfast with [Justin] when she started having stroke-like symptoms and was taken to the hospital.’

Hailey described the mini-stroke as ‘one of the scariest moments she’s ever been through,’ later explaining in a video on her YouTube channel, revealing that she was diagnosed with a Patent foramen ovale (PFO), a small opening in the heart.

During a concert in Denver, Justin opened up about the experience, telling the audience: ‘Obviously you guys know, most of you probably know or seen the news about my wife.

‘She’s okay, she’s good. It’s been scary, you know, it’s been really scary but I know for a fact that God has her in the palm of his hands.’

In June, Justin was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a disease that causes facial paralysis.

The diagnosis forced the singer to cancel some dates on his Justice World Tour with him taking to Instagram to share the reason with fans.

He explained: ‘Hey everyone Justin here, I wanted to update you guys on what’s been going on.

‘Obviously, as you can probably see with my face, I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt syndrome and it is from this virus that attacks the nerves in my ear and my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis.’

Justin added that it was ‘pretty serious’ and told fans: ‘Obviously my body is telling me I’ve got to slow down.’

2023

Despite the hardships of 2022, Justin interviewed Hailey for Vogue Australia in February 2023 where she praised their marriage.

‘My favourite thing about being married is honestly the companionship I feel we have,’ she told him.

‘Genuinely, you are my best friend in the entire world. There’s nobody I would rather spend more time with or do anything with.’

In May, she said in an interview with The Sunday Times that she wanted children with the singer ‘so bad’.

‘I literally cry about this all the time,’ she said. ‘I want kids so bad but I get scared. It’s enough that people say things about my husband or my friends. I can’t imagine having to confront people saying things about a child.’

‘We can only do the best we can to raise them. As long as they feel loved and safe.’

Of course, rumours soon began that the couple were expecting a child, forcing Hailey to confront the issue during a chat with GQ Hype.

‘There is something that’s disheartening about, damn, I can’t be bloated one time and not be pregnant? It would be a lie if I was like, “Oh yeah, I don’t give a s***”,’ she said.

‘When there comes a day that that is true, you, you as in the internet, will be the last to know.’

2024

This year began with a milestone birthday for Justin as he turned 30, with Hailey posting a sweet tribute to her husband on Instagram.

’30!!!!!!!????!!????!!!! that was fast,’ she wrote. ‘Words could never truly describe the beauty of who you are. Happy Birthday to you… love of my life, for life.’

Hailey, however, was once again forced to shut down ‘delusional’ split rumours after her father pleaded for ‘prayers’ for the couple in an Instagram post in February.

On February 26, Stephen shared a post from Christian influencer Victor Marx, who is close to the family through their involvement in Hillsong Church, which pleaded: ‘Christians, please when you think of Justin and Hailey, take a moment to offer a little prayer for them to have wisdom, protection, and to draw close to the Lord.’

Victor wrote in a caption alongside the post that there are ‘special challenges that folks in high visibility positions face … they often face spiritual warfare that … seeks to ship-wreck their faith, marriage and life in general.’

The rumours seem to be a thing of the past after the lovebirds announced they were expecting their first child on May 9.

A rep for the mum-to-be confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that she is currently ‘a little over six months pregnant’.

As well as the adorable video, other pictures showed the musician proudly taking pictures of his glowing wife, who cradled her stomach.

Both tagged each other in the caption, with no other message.
