A heartwarming hospital moment between Kate Beckinsale and her mother has moved audiences as the actress serenaded her 78-year-old mom during what she describes as one of the most challenging periods of her life.
The 51-year-old actress shared an emotional Instagram video on July 9, showing herself singing The Everly Brothers’ classic “Bye, Bye Love” to her hospitalized mother, Judy Loe. The touching gesture carried deep personal significance, as Beckinsale explained that her mother was part of a teenage harmony group called The Four Teens with her closest friends Mary, Sylvia, and Chris when they were just 14 years old.
Beckinsale’s musical tribute served as a way to bring her mother’s dearest companions into the hospital room through song and memory. “When my mum was 14, she was in a harmony group with her best friends Mary, Sylvia, (known as Fuzzy to this day because of an unfortunate perm decades ago) and Chris” she wrote in her caption, adding that “Mary unfortunately is no longer with us but up until very recently even though they are in their now late 70s they would get together and still absolutely kill it.”
The actress humbly acknowledged her vocal limitations while prioritizing her mother’s emotional needs. “I am a very poor substitute not being a very good singer but I want my mum’s dearest and oldest friends in her hospital room with her” she explained, addressing her mother’s surviving friends directly by writing “so Fuz and Chris, please know I’m trying to keep the Four Teens going as best as I can from a distance.”
Mother’s Ongoing Cancer Fight Brings Family Together
Loe’s current hospitalization comes as she continues battling stage 4 cancer, which Beckinsale first revealed publicly in late 2024. The diagnosis has prompted the actress to be more open about her family’s struggles while celebrating the precious moments they share together.
In February, Beckinsale reached out to her social media followers for support, asking for “a spare prayer or magic or miracle or sunbeam please send it to my mama, my most extraordinary, warrior, generous, humble, loving, unique, irreplaceable Mama.” Her words reflected both the gravity of her mother’s condition and the deep admiration she holds for Loe’s strength throughout this difficult journey.
The actress has faced significant family losses in recent years, including the death of her stepfather Roy Battersby in January 2024. Beckinsale has also dealt with the earlier loss of her father Richard Beckinsale, who passed away at just 31 years old.
Actress Addresses Personal Struggles Amid Family Crisis
Beckinsale’s hospital video comes during what she has described as an exceptionally difficult period in her personal life. Earlier this month, when followers commented on her appearance in bikini photos, the actress responded candidly about her current struggles, stating, “Yes I do. I’m going through one of the most deeply painful times of my life. The body keeps the score” according to Us Weekly. She was referring to “The Body Keeps the Score,” a bestselling book about trauma and healing.
In her recent post, the actress expressed deep respect for her mother’s character and lifelong friendships, writing, “it is a mark of my mother’s extraordinary capacity for love and deep respect for relationship history that her friendships with her early school friends are still so very current.”
Fans responded with overwhelming support in the comments section, with one writing “You are a wonderful daughter ð I’m familiar with this pain. I’m so sorry 𪔠while another remarked “Your singing is beautiful and the tribute even more so. Sending love and tight hugs, Kate.”
Beckinsale concluded by inserting some self-deprecating humor, apologizing to “anybody in the hospital subject to my dreadful singing.”
