Early in her career, Kate Hudson was advised to emancipate herself from her parents so she could land more roles. During a discussion on the “Awards Chatter” podcast, Hudson revealed that as a teenager she landed a part in a project, but it came with a big request.

Hudson, the daughter of musician Bill Hudson and Oscar-winning actor Goldie Hawn, revealed, “I had gotten this part that they wanted me to basically divorce my parents so that I could work as an adult.” But Hawn was not having it: “My mom was like, ‘No – never happening.’”

Luckily for Hudson, she landed a different role that she was really excited about, a guest spot on the teen drama “Party of Five.” “… it was so great,” Hudson recalled. “I was 16 and obsessed with ‘Party of Five’ so walking on to that set was like … I couldn’t believe that I was going to have a guest role on it …”

Hudson’s relationship with her biological father has been strained over the years, and she considers her mother’s longtime partner, actor Kurt Russell, her dad. She spoke about tagging along with her parents to their various acting jobs, noting that Russell’s films were the fun ones.

“ … it was like ‘Big Trouble, Little China’ and we had slides that would, like, go down into rubber fish,” Hudson shared. But overall, it wasn’t as thrilling as you’d expect.

“The thing is, when you grow up on a movie set, it’s not that fun,” the actor explained. “It’s a lot of waiting around. So, you realize you really love it when you don’t wanna get off the movie set.”

Hawn and Russell had a rule that if Hudson was going to hang around their sets, she had to do some work. She became a “runner” helping out in wardrobe, makeup, and even organizing film cans.

Hudson and Hawn’s Close Relationship

Despite not going through with “divorcing” her parents, Hudson went on to have a wildly successful career. And her mom has been by her side all along. The pair are so close that Hudson, who is also a musician, wrote a song about Hawn that she released in 2025.

“Right on Time” appears on the deluxe version of Hudson’s debut album, “Glorious” and is about Hawn’s life pre-fame. “As a daughter, I think we’re supposed to carry on the stories of our parents,” Hudson told The Los Angeles Times. “And her story is amazing …”
