Comedian Katherine Ryan has opened up about her fears of getting pregnant again after miscarrying three times.

The Canadian star, 41, is a mum to Violet, 15, Fred, three, and Fenna, one.

She shares her teenager with ex-boyfriend Alex Edelman and her two youngest with Bobby Kootstra, with whom she entered a civil partnership in 2019.

Discussing her family life comes naturally to the beloved TV star, who frequently cracks jokes about the trials and tribulations of parenting in her routines.

However, away from the dazzling lights of showbiz, Katherine’s road to motherhood has been anything but smooth sailing.

In a new interview, the comic shares that she would love to have more children, but acknowledges that time isn’t on her side.

‘I’m old. I used to think I was going to be the babies’ dad because I’m working, but actually I’m like their grandmother,’ she told OK! Magazine.

‘My back hurts, sometimes I give them treats. I’m like a fun grandma.’

Katherine, who explores fertility in her reality show Parental Guidance, admitted she’s been deterred from expanding her family after learning the shocking statistics about pregnancy.

‘We’ve always gotten pregnant with the babies quite quickly. I’ve been pregnant five times in five years, but that also means I’ve had three miscarriages in five years,’ she said, adding that the likelihood of miscarriage increases as a woman gets older.

‘You have to find a balance between what you can personally stand and risks you’re willing to take.

‘I’m working a lot, and I don’t know if I could have a medical emergency like that while I’m in Lisbon on Thursday.’

Surrogacy is one avenue many celebrities go down, with the likes of Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, and Chrissy Teigen all welcoming babies via a surrogate.

Katherine, however, has ruled that option out.

‘It’s controversial to say, but I wouldn’t want that labour – both literal and also the workload – to fall on another woman.’

While noting that surrogacy is ‘wonderful’ and praising people who wish to offer it for couples ‘who need it’, it would feel ‘exploitative’ for her.

So, for now, the comedy favourite is choosing to focus on her career, as she currently travels the country with her Battleaxe tour.

‘We’ve taken this year to focus on the tour,’ she stated.

‘It’s the first time I’ve toured in a long time without a newborn or pregnancy, and these are things that working mothers in every industry have to consider.’

Fans love how Katherine is so frank when it comes to discussing life as a mum, having previously confessed that while she loves her brood, having kids ‘ruined’ the life she had before.

‘My children have enriched my life; they’re such a blessing and I would never trade them for anything,’ Katherine told Women Magazine.

The Roast Battle icon continued: ‘But I would be lying if I said they didn’t ruin the life I had before. But I rebuilt a better one and that’s fine.

‘I would be pretending if I said that I could still do all the things that I could before and I think we’re selling this fantasy of what motherhood means if we aren’t honest about that.’

Katherine is best known for her appearances on British TV panel shows, including 8 Out of 10 Cats, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, A League of Their Own, and Mock the Week, to name just a few.

As a stand-up comedian, she’s also featured in the line-up of the coveted BBC’s Live at the Apollo and released her own stand-up specials with Netflix.

In another string to her bow, Katherine has appeared as an actress in several sitcoms, most notably her show The Duchess.
