It sounds like Keanu Reeves has landed himself another video game role, this time as edgelord favourite Shadow in the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 movie.

The box office release of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 did so well in 2022 that publisher Paramount Pictures is filling its roster full of A-list stars for its upcoming live action sequel.

Sonic 3 is set to hit the big screen on December 20 and sees Ben Schwartz reprise his role as Sonic, as well as Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik.

And now that line-up has allegedly been joined by Keanu Reeves, who will be voicing the gun-slinging anti-hero Shadow the Hedgehog.

Shadow was teased during the credits for Sonic 2, so it’s not surprising that he plays a role in the upcoming sequel. Although it’s not yet clear if he’ll actually have a gun.

Coincidentally, this isn’t the first time Reeves and Elba have been in the same video game project together, as they both feature prominently in Cyberpunk 2077, although Elba is only in the Phantom Liberty expansion.

It was Hollywood Reporter who confirmed the news of Reeves involvement in Sonic, after ‘multiple sources’ told the publication that he had been cast.

Fans’ reaction to the news is overwhelmingly positive, though some aren’t completely sure how Reeves’ likeable persona will fit the ultra-edgy Shadow.

It was rumoured that Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels, was going to play Shadow in Sonic 3, but it’s unclear if he was ever in contention of if that was just a fan invention.

All we know about Shadow’s involvement in the upcoming Sonic film is from a brief credits scene in Sonic 2, which you can watch below (so technically it’s a spoiler).
