Kevin Costner has been riding hard toward a new cinematic frontier with his passion project “Horizon: An American Saga.” But as “Yellowstone” ends, the actor isnât ready to hang up John Duttonâs hat completely. In a recent interview, Costner revealed that he hasn’t ruled out returning to the world of “Yellowstone,” despite a messy exit and the series killing off his character off-screen.
Kevin Costner Is Open to Return â But On His Terms
Costner famously left “Yellowstone” during the production of Season 5 following reports of contract disputes and scheduling conflicts. He poured himself into Horizon, his four-part Western epic, but fans have always wondered if he might ride back into the Yellowstone universe. In a new conversation with “Entertainment Tonight,” Costner joked that “Horizon feels like thirty-five years ago,” and admitted that while Parts One and Two are finished, making the remaining two installments may prove difficult.
In the same interview, he spoke about his time on “Yellowstone” with genuine affection. âItâs modern-day ranching,â he said. â’Yellowstone’ was able to capture that so beautifully. I mean, itâs a bit of a soap opera. We should all be in prison.â
Despite creator Taylor Sheridan killing off John Dutton behind the scenes, Costner hasnât dismissed the possibility of a return. âI loved the show,â he told People last year. âI liked the people on the show. I liked what it was about. I love that world⦠Iâve always felt that it might be an interesting moment to come back and finish the mythology of this modern-day family. And if that happens, I would step into it if I agreed with how it was being done.â
That door might not be entirely closedâespecially in a franchise that thrives on flashbacks and character crossovers.
Costner Hasnât Watched the Finaleâand Isnât Thinking About It
While “Yellowstone” fans debated the ending of season 5B, Costner made it clear he hasnât tuned in. When asked by the Daily Mail about the showâs conclusion, he replied, âI’m not thinking about that. I don’t think I’ve given it any thought. We’ll just let it go.â
The actor also addressed his fractured relationship with co-star Luke Grimes, who played Kayce Dutton. Earlier this month, Grimes told Esquire that filming season 5 part 2 was âactually the easiest seasonâ due to the absence of on-set conflictâan apparent reference to Costner. When asked if they had spoken since, Costner replied bluntly, âWeâre done talking.â
Despite the tension, the Yellowstone brand is far from finished. Following the success of prequels “1883” and “1923,” Sheridan is moving full speed ahead with additional spinoffs, including “1944,” “The Madison,” “Dutton Ranch,” and another new show led by Grimes, “Y: Marshals.”
Even though Costner didnât return for the final chapters of “Yellowstone,” he remains a defining figure in the sagaâs legacy. With Paramount always looking to expand the universe, the idea of a surprise cameoâor flashbackâmay not be entirely off the table.
