The eight-episode documentary series from Costner and fellow executive producer Doris Kearns Goodwin will “provide a fresh look at the sweeping and complex history of the American West through a wide range of conflict – all driven by the desperate struggle to control the land itself,” according to History’s description.</p>

<p id=”par-5_64″><em>The West </em>will not present a sanitized version of American history, History promises. The series, which will be heavy on reenactments, judging by the trailer, will share “stories from diverse perspectives” in order to illuminate “both the indelible contributions of the pioneers who shaped the dream of the American West and the courageous resistance of Native American tribes who valiantly defended their ancestral land.” </p>
<p id=”par-6_66″>Events highlighted in <em>The West </em>include Chief Little Turtle’s decisive victory over the U.S. Army in the late 18th century, which sparked a counteroffensive from General “Mad” Anthony Wayne. Viewers will also learn about the battles fought by the Blackfeet, Comanche, and Lakota Sioux tribes and by warriors like Red Cloud and Crazy Horse and hear the story of vigilante Joaquin Murrietta, a Gold Rush-era outlaw. </p>
<p id=”par-7_26″>“The West is a place where anything is possible,” Goodwin, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, says in the trailer. “It is the essence of the American Dream.”</p>

<p id=”par-8_74″>Costner has long been interested in stories of American history and westward expansion. He won an Academy Award for his 1990 revisionist western <em>Dances With Wolves</em> and later starred in <em>Wyatt Earp </em>and <em>Open Range</em>. From 2018 to 2023, he starred in Paramount Network’s gritty drama, <em>Yellowstone, </em>which focuses on the Duttons, a powerful Montana ranching family. The Taylor Sheridan series has spawned multiple spinoffs about earlier generations of Duttons and their journey west. </p>
<p id=”par-9_27″>In 2024, he released <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/kevin-costners-new-post-film-might-slap-face-yellowstone-fans.html/”><em>Horizon: An American Saga</em></a><em> – Chapter 1, </em>the first in a series of four epic films about the establishment of one Western town. </p>
<p id=”par-10_95″>“[I]n Westerns, we’re always seeing these little wood towns and never seeing how they actually got started,” he told <a href=”https://www.rogerebert.com/interviews/kevin-costner-horizon-an-american-saga-chapter-1-interview” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>RogerEbert.com</a> of the story he wanted to tell in <em>Horizon. </em>“We don’t see the displacement of people. We don’t even understand what happened, and we are numb that we did that to others … The myth of these ‘great, open spaces’ is that, actually, they were already occupied by people. There were people who were doing quite nicely there, without us. And this national appetite to move across the country caused all this chaos and heartache.”</p>
