
Serena Williams is back!
The legendary tennis star has announced that she is coming out of retirement and will play doubles at the WTA 500 Queenâs Club event in London next week. The news was announced by the tournament in a post on X on Monday, June 1.
âQueenâs Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,â Williams said in a statement, per The Athletic. âGrass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and Iâm excited to be back competing on one of the sportâs most iconic stages.â
The WTA also confirmed Williams’ return.
“Serena is one of the greatest athletes of all-time, with a legacy that extends far beyond the court,” WTA chair Valerie Camillo said in a statement, per ESPN. “Her return is an expression of her passion for competition, and I cannot wait to see her face a new generation of top players. “Serena is not just a great champion. She’s a successful entrepreneur, a powerful advocate for the issues that matter — and one of the most iconic women in the world. We are thrilled to welcome her back to the WTA Tour at this hugely exciting moment for women’s tennis.”

GettyWilliams’ return comes after there’s been a lot of speculation in recent weeks, and many of the WTA players were asked about the possibility.
“That would be really cool,” Coco Gauff said, per ESPN. “I did say one of my biggest regrets was not being able to play her. … We’ll see. But I think it would be cool for the sport to have a legend back playing.”
“That’s definitely something I would be really excited about, just to see around the sites and playing matches again,” Naomi Osaka added. “I think it’s really cool for tennis, I would be excited to see her outfits again, too. But also her playing. I think she’s one of the best players in the world, of course.”
