Lord Of The Rings game by Warhorse Studios confirmed in the most boring way

Warhorse Studios will be keeping itself very busy as it’s juggling both a new Kingdom Come project and a Lord Of The Rings role-player.

Just a couple of months ago, it was rumoured that Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 developer Warhorse Studios is working on something related to The Lord Of The Rings.

When directly asked about it, all Warhorse was willing to say was that its next project is another role-playing game, but it didn’t explicitly deny the rumour either.

Turns out that’s because it’s true as the studio has announced, with shockingly little fanfare, that both a Lord Of The Rings game as well as a new Kingdom Come game are in development.

Specifically, Warhorse refers to the former as an open world Middle-earth role-playing game, so it’s not necessarily set during the Third Age, the period of history where the events of The Lord Of The Rings take place.

The game could instead be set during an earlier period, such as the Second Age, which is where Amazon’s The Rings Of Power TV show takes place, or even during the later ages set after the end of The Lord Of The Rings.

As a reminder, this isn’t the only Lord Of The Rings game that’s said to be in the works. Tomb Raider studio Crystal Dynamics is rumoured to be making one too, which could be another collaboration with Amazon.

There’s also speculation that The Lord Of The Rings: War In The North, an old action game from 2011, will see a remaster, even though it was a commercial failure when it launched.

Warhorse is being vague about its next Kingdom Come game as well. The immediate assumption is that it’s Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3, but it’s only described as a ‘new Kingdom Come adventure.’

This could suggest it’s a spin-off of some kind with a new subtitle and may not even be a role-playing game like the previous two entries.

Neither project has a release window of any kind and while they are inherently exciting, Warhorse announced them in the blandest way possible via a very brief post on its X account, only adding, ‘We’re excited to tell you more when the time is right.’

This lack of showmanship isn’t an issue unique to Warhorse, though, as plenty of others are guilty of boring game announcements too. Before its big showcase for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, Ubisoft admitted to the game’s existence with a single image.

Sony, meanwhile, announced a release date for its PlayStation 5 exclusive Wolverine game via a short social media post and didn’t even have a new trailer to go along with it.
