Lou Koller, lead singer of hardcore pioneers Sick of It All, dies aged 59

Lou Koller, frontman for Sick of It All, has died aged 59 after being diagnosed with adenocarcinoma cancer.
The punk rock singer’s death was announced on the Instagram page of the band with a heartfelt statement commemorating him as a ‘beloved friend and iconic frontman’.
‘It’s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller. The level of loss that we feel at this time is overwhelming,’ the statement began.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the band, which was first formed in Queens, New York by Lou, his brother Pete Koller and drummer Armand Majidi.
The band praised Lou’s ‘camaraderie, commitment and enthusiasm’ through the years, adding: ‘Lou had the power to raise everyone’s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.’
The band released their final album in 2018, Wake the Sleeping Dragon! and have been touring since then.

In 2024, Lou shared that doctors had found a tumour in his oesophagus that went into his stomach, which would require him to pause touring in order to undergo treatment.
Tributes have flooded in for the music artist who is the face of one of the most prominent New York hardcore bands.
‘There are no words. Yo Lou, I hope that somehow and somewhere you‘ll know how many lives you have touched and changed forever. Such an inspiration,’ donotsofficial wrote.
