Macaulay Culkin has plot idea for Home Alone sequel as he hints at reprising role
Macaulay Culkin has teased reprising the iconic role of Kevin McCallister — and even has an idea of how it should look. The actor is currently on his ‘A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin’ tour in celebration of 35 years of Home Alone. According to the tour website, audience members can ‘relive the iconic scenes and heartwarming moments from Home Alone on the big screen, and then dive deep into the behind-the-scenes stories and insights with Macaulay Culkin himself.’ (Picture: Getty Images)
The latter includes hearing about Macaulay’s experiences on set, his favourite memories from filming, and his take on why this movie has become such a beloved Christmas classic. During a recent show stop, the star shocked fans by revealing that he ‘wouldn’t be completely allergic’ to returning as the beloved character. However, Macaulay added that the story ‘would have to be just right.’ (Picture: Century Fox/Kobal/Shutterstock)
It’s a good job then, that seconds later, the 45-year-old admitted that he had an idea of what the sequel could be about. Variety reports that he casually told the crowd: ‘I kind of had this idea. I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me, and then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me.’ (Picture: Century Fox/Kobal/Shutterstock)
Macaulay added: ‘The house is some sort of metaphor for our [father and son] relationship,’ and Kevin’s mission is to ‘get let back into his son’s heart’. The actor told the audience that the idea is the ‘closest elevator pitch’ that he has. ‘I’m not completely allergic to it, the right thing,’ he concluded. (Picture: Moviestore/Shutterstock)
Of course, this scenario would replace the slapstick Wet Bandits, aka Harry and Marv, who in the original movies attempted to break into the McCallister home while the family were away. Kevin and his creative set of traps stopped the duo from robbing the home, and in the process the criminals get injured in the most hilarious of ways. Some of the most iconic booby traps included the paint-pot pendulum, the feather coat, the tarantula, and the shovel to the face. (Picture: Moviestore/Shutterstock)
While Macaulay’s 21st-century pitch is all well and good for hardcore Home Alone fans, there’s nothing actually set in stone. In fact, in reality, there’ll likely never be another movie in the franchise. This is because back in August, Home Alone director Chris Columbus said that he would be sceptical of another sequel. He told Entertainment Tonight: ‘I think Home Alone really exists as, not at this timepiece, but it was this very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that. I think it’s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone.’ (Picture: Moviestore/Shutterstock)
Despite Columbus’ finality of the whole thing, it didn’t stop fans sharing their own sequel thoughts on X. Responding to Macaulay’s idea, which in all honesty, many weren’t in favour of, they dropped alternative pitches. While some had real depth, others were just absurd. Case in point: ‘Harry and Marv are now living in a residential home and an older Kevin tries to rob the place on Xmas. Switched roles and it’s called Alone in the Home,’ one person suggested, while another said: ‘I’ve always wanted to see a movie where Kevin is a parent who actually leaves his own child home alone and spends the movie trying to get home to them. Planes, Trains And Automobiles style. While his kid fends off intruders LOL.’ (Picture: 20thCentFox/Everett/Shutterstock)
Someone else penned: ‘I actually preferred the other idea where an adult Kevin has become a criminal, while Harry and Marv have turned their lives around, and he’s the one terrorizing them this time.’ A fourth added: ‘Culkin’s kid-outsmarting-dad twist could slap harder than the original if they nail the traps and keep it raw, not some sappy reboot mush.’ (Picture: Moviestore/Shutterstock) Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source
