Marge Simpson, the Simpson family’s long-suffering (but admirably patient) matriarch, has returned to ‘The Simpsons’ after she passed away in the previous episode.

In the season 36 finale of the show, Marge Simpson lost her life. Having been a mainstay in the show since its first episode all the way back in 1989, fans were shocked to see the popular character, voiced so wonderfully by Julie Kavner, perish, leaving her husband Homer a widower.
The Circumstances of Marge Simpson’s ‘Demise’

That finale, “Estranger Things,” which aired on May 18 earlier this year, depicted Marge’s worst fears coming true. Her two eldest children, Bart and Lisa, drifted apart, resulting in Marge envisioning a future in which they reunite to care for their distraught aging father.
Unfortunately, that was because in that future, some 35 years ahead, Marge had tragically passed away.
With the episode ending on such a monumental bombshell, ‘The Simpsons’ executive producer Matt Selman took action and assured the show’s fans that she wasn’t gone for good. He told Variety in July, “Obviously since the ‘The Simpsons’ future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they’re all different every time. Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago.”
The relief was almost palpable among fans when that was confirmed in the season 37 opener.
Marge’s Welcome Return

Marge Simpson’s highly anticipated and extremely welcome return occurred in the September 28 episode, “Thrifty Ways to Thieve Your Mother.”
It kicked season 37 off in jovial style, as it was revealed that Marge was alive and well as she attempted to strengthen her relationship with daughter Lisa by introducing her to her favorite old school television series, ‘Keagan’s Pond’ â a teen drama not too dissimilar to ‘Dawson’s Creek.’
Watching the show from her younger days inspired Marge to unearth her old wardrobe from the 1990s, prompting Lisa to use them to give her own look a cool retro overhaul. The new look made Lisa Springfield Elementary’s most stylish and popular student.
Lisa’s newfound popularity resulted in her gaining a new group of trendy friends. However, they turned out to be bad news, stealing retro clothes from Springfield’s resident moms. Marge stepping in to save her daughter from the miscreants brought the mother-daughter duo closer than ever before.
Although Lisa was grounded, she took the punishment as a teachable moment. A profound ending saw Marge quoting ‘Keagan’s Pond,’ telling Lisa, “Remember: I’m with you for the long haul. As long as there’s a pond and a ladder, I’ll be there.”
The next episode of ‘The Simpsons,’ titled “Keep Chalm and Gary On,” airs on October 5 on Fox.
