Shriver posted her message on Sunday, October 12. Keaton died on Saturday, October 11. She was 79. The Instagram post shows a beautiful throwback photo of Keaton, who looks into the camera.

In the caption, Shriver shared her thoughts. “Diane Keaton was a true original. I grew up watching her, marveling at her,” she wrote. “I watched as she made her mark across all kinds of creative fields. She was always growing, creating, staying true to her original self. We lived in the same neighborhood, ate at the same neighborhood restaurant. She was always joyful, kind, generous in spirit. Every time I saw her, I said to myself ‘now that is a true original.’ She did life her way, and that is one hell of an achievement. Safe passage.” She ended her message with a red-heart emoji.

The beautiful message has been flooded with reactions from fans who agree with Shriver’s summary of the incredible life Keaton lived. “Great photo you chose n tribute. She truly was one of a kind,” a comment reads. “Diane Keaton— with her radiant smile, her effortless grace, and that infectious, unstoppable laughter. She showed us that beauty is being utterly, joyfully oneself,” another person wrote.

“We were so lucky to live in the same world as that incredible brand of sunshine,” a third person shared.

Shriver’s reaction is one of many as celebrities have shared their thoughts and mourned Keaton’s passing. Tributes include ones from actress Viola Davis, “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon, musician Rita Wilson, and Backstreet Boys star AJ McLean.

Keaton is survived by her two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke. She adopted her children in 1996 and 2001, respectively. Unlike their famous mother, Keaton’s children chose not to follow in her footsteps and prefer to stay out of the limelight. They want to maintain this same privacy after their mother’s death. “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness,” a spokesperson told People.
