Maria Shriver Shows Support for Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Heartbreaking’ Loss With a Gentle Reminder

Jimmy Kimmel’s dear friend Cleto Escobedo III died on Tuesday, November 11. He was 59. Escobedo was a musician and also the lead of the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” house band, but he and Kimmel had been good friends since childhood.

Escobedo’s passing was listed as cardiogenic shock on his death certificate, TMZ reports. Kimmel honored his friend in a touching tribute on his show. He was emotional as he discussed the importance of cherishing your friends, how lucky he was to be with his friend all the time, and the beautiful bond they shared.

His words had a tremendous impact on his audience, and Maria Shriver was so touched by what he said that she shared a clip of his speech on Instagram. 

The clip shows Kimmel reflecting on what Escobedo meant to him, and Shriver highlights the importance of good friendships and the beautiful monologue the talk show host delivers. “Last night, @jimmykimmel paid tribute to his childhood best friend and bandleader Cleto Escobedo III in an absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful monologue,” she wrote. “This is just a little of it, but I will share the link to the full 22 minutes (I urge you to watch it all).” She praised the clip for being “what friendship looks like,” adding, “This is what we all want in life. A friend by our side through the good and bad.”

She continued, “What Jimmy says sounds so simple, yet I hope we all take it to heart, ‘Cherish your friends. We’re not here forever.’ Today take the time to call up a friend, send them a message, reach out in whatever way you can. Take that extra step to let them know they matter. Don’t take their love for granted. Don’t take your time with them for granted. Cherish it all!”

His love for his best friend was absolutely palpable,” a comment reads. “I am heartbroken for him and all who loved Cleto.
