After more than 25 years leading âLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit,â Mariska Hargitay has worked with hundreds of guest stars â but only a few ever made her stop and think, that oneâs going to be huge.
The âLaw & Order: SVUâ Guest Stars Who Impressed Mariska Hargitay Early On
Appearing on Amy Poehlerâs podcast âGood Hang,â Hargitay was asked which guest stars stood out over the years. Without hesitation, she replied, âAbigail Breslin.â She added that there were âtwo people that I went, âHoly God,ââ including Breslin and another familiar face, Meghann Fahy.
Breslin appeared in the season 6 premiere at just seven years old, playing a young kidnapping victim. Hargitay recalled being blown away by her raw talent even between takes.
âShe was so young on the show,â Hargitay said. âShe kept doing this dance between takes, some kind of nursery rhyme schtick. I would just do it with her. Then theyâd say âAction,â and I swear to God, I donât think Iâve ever seen anything like it.â
The actress remembered that Breslin could shift instantly from playing to performing. âShe would turn, one tear, and start lip quivering. No acting. I remember going, âWhat the (expletive) are you like Meryl Streep?ââ
When filming stopped, the future Oscar nominee would immediately return to her playful routine. âI was like, âThis kid is touched. She is so magical,ââ Hargitay said.
Meghann Fahy Earned Early Praise on the Set of âSVUâ
A decade after Breslinâs episode, another rising star caught Hargitayâs attention â Meghann Fahy, who appeared in the season 16 episode âDownloaded Child.â
âAnother person that I called it, I remember saying it to her, is Meghann Fahy,â Hargitay shared on the podcast. âWhen she did the show, I was like, âLet me tell you something. Iâm just gonna tell you right now â youâre gonna be a big movie star. Youâre gonna be a huge star.ââ
Fahyâs role as a mother accused of keeping her daughter locked inside their apartment showcased the emotional depth that would later help her shine in âThe White Lotus.â
âI donât like using that word âstarâ because what does that even mean?â Hargitay said. âBut I just recognized her talent, her light â she was so sparkly internally, like an internal sparkle. Itâs so exciting to see them go on and go, âI called it! I called it!ââ
Mariska Hargitay: From âFriendsâ Auditions to a Record-Breaking TV Career
During her chat with Poehler, Hargitay also reflected on her early career and revealed she once auditioned multiple times for âFriends.â
âI did a lot of comedy auditions,â she told Poehler. âI did âSeinfeldâ and I did âSingle Guy,â and I tested for âFriendsâ so many times. I think for Monica. I always thought I would end up being on a sitcom or doing comedy.â
Even when she transitioned to dramatic roles, Hargitay said she still leaned toward projects with humor. âI was like, I want to do drama but it has to be funny because thatâs what I felt like my gifts were⦠I would tell people, âIâm going to be a comedian because Iâm funny and Iâm pretty.ââ
Her instincts eventually led her to âLaw & Order: SVU,â where her portrayal of Olivia Benson made television history. Now in season 26, she holds the record for the longest-running live-action primetime character of all time.
