After five years of waiting, it looks like Gavin and Stacey fans might finally get the answer they’ve been desperately hoping for.

(No, it’s not what happened on the fishing trip.)

But it is about Nessa and Smithy’s future together, after the 2019 Christmas special ended on a huge cliffhanger with Ruth Jones’ character’s shock proposal to James Corden’s.

Ahead of the final ever episode airing this Christmas, details over possible plots have been emerging as the stars, including Joanna Page and Mathew Horne, have been filming.

And one of them now revolves around Nessa’s hen do, with new images showing Stacey actress Joanna, Ruth, Alison Steadman, who plays Gavin’s mum Pam, Melanie Walters, who plays Stacey’s mum Gwen, and Dawn actress Julia Davis filming a girls’ night out.

Though they’re all dressed up, the hen party doesn’t seem to go to plan, with Nessa spotted in tears at one point.

She’s pictured looking frustrated and upset outside a bar, with the rest of the girls in the scene, crowding around her.

Other images see Dawn, Pam and Gwen grinning at Stacey, who wears a bright pink jacket over a floral dress, while Nessa stays true to her character in a black outfit with a burgundy jacket.

The cast have been filming in Essex and also on Trinity Street in Barry Island, where they recently wrapped up filming and waved goodbye to fans.

In videos shared to social media, Ruth addressed the cheering crowd for one last time, saying: ‘Thank you so much for coming here today and being so patient because you haven’t seen anything because we’ve been indoors!

‘But it shows that you are true committed fans of the show and we hope that you won’t be disappointed on Christmas Day when all will be revealed.’

She went on: ‘It’s our farewell to Barry and to Trinity Street.

‘You won’t be seeing us here anymore. But we’ve had a wonderful 17 years. It’s been fantastic.’

‘Thank you very much for everything, we’ll see you soon,’ James added.

This comes after James teased that Nessa and Smithy would get their happily ever after, shortly after the final episode was announced.

He shared an image of a sweet illustration showing Smithy’s arm around Nessa, with love hearts around their heads.

The message below them read a lyric from the show’s soundtrack: ‘Tell me tomorrow, I’ll wait by the window, for you.’

Fans of course assumed this meant that Smithy said yes when Nessa popped the question, while James and Mathew have also been spotted on set with pictures indicating that a wedding is taking place.

Further details about the Christmas special have been kept tightly under wraps, with reports that the cast have been told to keep their scripts hidden and stay on ‘high alert’ when it comes to leaks, as bosses are challenged in keeping the storylines a secret.

The fan-favourite show aired for three series between 2007 and 2010 and made a comeback in 2019 for a one-off festive episode which ended on Nessa’s proposal to Smithy.

It scored the highest overnight Christmas ratings in 12 years, attracting an average audience of 11.6 million viewers, making it the biggest festive special since Christmas Day 2008.

Gavin and Stacey returns to BBC One and iPlayer on Christmas Day, with episodes available to watch on iPlayer.
