The Met Gala has been an annual tradition since 1948, though it didn’t start having a theme until 1973. But it’s fair to say the over-the-top fashion has taken on a life of its own in recent years.
While a book could be written (and many have!) about all the iconic looks that have appeared on the red carpet in recent years, there are some notable Met Gala All-Stars who never disappoint.
Here are just some of the celebrities we’ll be watching for May 5, when the Met Gala 2025 rolls out the red carpet with the theme âTailored for You,â in connection with the Costumeâs Instituteâs landmark new exhibition, âSuperfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
Katy Perry Cemented All-Star Status With Chandelier Dress

While singer Katy Perry has never shied away from a fashion risk, she locked in her Met Gala All-Star status in 2019, when the theme was “Celebrating Camp.” Perry came dressed as a two-tier chandelier- and yes, it lit up!
Her 2018 look with full feathered angel wings is a close second.
Will Perry be at the 2025 Met Gala? The guest list each year is top secret, but we do know this. Perry is on tour but does NOT have a show on May 5. In fact, she kicks off the U.S. leg of her tour in Houston May 7.
Hats Off to Sarah Jessica Parker’s Met Gala Style

We’ve known Sarah Jessica Parker was fearless about hats ever since Carrie Bradshaw wore a bird on her head for the wedding that wasn’t in “Sex and the City.”
But SJP has gone next level with headwear for the Met Gala. And she cemented her icon status in 2018 when she wore a Neapolitan nativity scene on her head as an homage to the âHeavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imaginationâ dress code.
Honorable mention for her 2013 look, when her Philip Treacy mohawk hat was so tall that the actress had to sit on the floor of her car as she made her way to the museum.
According to Elle, Parker has attended the Met Gala 12 times, beginning in 1995 when she wore a black velvet gown she purchased at a thrift store.
Madonna Courts Controversy With Fashion Choices

Madonna is expected to attend this year’s Met Gala after a seven-year absence. While the Material Girl has never been afraid to show off her, uh, assets… her 2018 Met Gala look is considered her most controversial.
For the night’s theme of âHeavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination,â Madonna wore a black Jean Paul Gaultier gown featuring a cross cutout, coupled with a cross-adorned crown.
Lady Gaga Leans Into Layers for the Element of Surprise

Lady Gaga is savvy enough to know if one look is good, two looks are even better.
While the singer has only attended the Met Gala three times, Lady Gaga’s strategic use of layering has allowed her to show off six different outfits on the iconic staircase.
Last year, Gaga didn’t attend the gala. But in an Instagram post, she let fans in on what she would have worn if she had gone.
Kim Kardashian Hasn’t Missed the Met Since 2013

Kim Kardashian first climbed those iconic steps in 2013, when she was heavily pregnant with oldest child North West.
And she hasn’t missed one since. Among her most iconic moments, 2022 would have to rank near the top. Kardashian borrowed the Bob Mackieâdesigned dress famously worn by Marilyn Monroe to sing âHappy Birthdayâ to President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden.
To fit into the dress, Kim was quoted in Vanity Fair saying she lost 16 pounds in three weeks.
In 2024, Kim said the corset on her dress was so tight, breathing was “an art form” that she had to practice ahead of the gala.
But in 2021, Kim rocked her most shocking look, covered head-to-toe in black, including her face.
If her Instagram is an indication, she’ll be there this year too. In her Instagram stories on May 2, Kim posted a selfie with a cosmetic dermatologist. With it, she wrote, “A must before the Met! @simonourianmd1. Simply the best.”
Honorable Mentions to Doja Cat, Priyanka Chopra, Zendaya, Rihanna and Lil Nas X

While far from an exhaustive list of the biggest risk takers keeping the Met Gala exciting each year, some celebs never disappoint.
Doja Cat has channeled her inner feline and even gotten soaking wet last year for her art. Priyanka Chopra isn’t afraid to try looks that are out there. And Zendaya brings her A-game every year.
Rhianna has been attending the Met Gala since 2007 and has wowed the crowd consistently. Since her partner A$AP Rocky will be one of the nightâs co-chairs, you can expect to see her at Monday’s event.
And Lil Nas X has gone to great lengths to shock and surprise.
Does Anna Wintour Approve the Looks Ahead of the Met Gala?
Vogue Editor-in-Chief and host of the Met Gala Anna Wintour may have an iron grip on the world of fashion, but she’s debunking the myth that she approves every outfit before celebrities show up at the gala.
In an interview with “Good Morning America,” host Michael Strahan asked her, “Is it true that you know in advance what all the guests will be wearing?”
“No,” Wintour replied with a laugh. “Many call and ask for our advice, so we try and help some of them as best we can. Some, [I have] no idea.”
